She Rejected the Mafia Heir, He Went Crazy Chapter 06

She Rejected the Mafia Heir, He Went Crazy Chapter 06

Before I knew it, three months had passed since I’d left the country.

The job turned out to be surprisingly easy. I didn’t have to punch a clock-just provide technical support when the client company ran into problems.

At first, I wasn’t used to this kind of work rhythm. I couldn’t help but go into the office every day, checking if there was anything I could help with.

A close friend from before found out and was completely speechless. She said through gritted teeth, “Are you addicted to work? If you can do it, fine. If you can’t, quit and let me take your place!”

I laughed. She had a point. But I wasn’t a workaholic. I was just used to it.

My parents were a mess. My father drank. My mother gambled. From the time I was old enough to understand, I knew if I wanted to avoid becoming like them, I’d have to work a hundred times

harder.

Luckily, I was smart. I got a full scholarship to a private school with a perfect GPA. Then I went to an Ivy League. After graduation, I landed a good job with a decent salary.

But I still didn’t have the right to rest. Because I met Leonardo.

The first time we met, my parents had tricked me into coming home-they wanted to sell me to pay off their gambling debts. I ran. In my desperation, I jumped into the first car I saw.

His car. It was nice-though he later explained it was his boss’s car and he was just a driver.

Leonardo saved me. He even helped put my parents in prison.

We fell in love. He said he wanted to buy a house and marry me. I wanted a family so badly that I

worked double time, saved every dollar.

But in the end, Leonardo made a complete fool of me.

“Emily.” My friend suddenly said my name. She seemed to hesitate, wanting to say something but stopping herself.

I snapped back to reality and smiled. “You can say whatever’s on your mind. No need to hold back

with me.”

She took a deep breath. “It’s your boyfriend-he came looking for me. Asked where you were. Of

course, I didn’t tell him. I don’t know what happened between you two, but I’m definitely on your side… But he seems to have a lot of power. He looks connected to the Vitale family somehow, and he’s been using that to pressure the corporate office. And the way he’s been acting-something’s off. He’s like a calm madman. Honestly, it’s a little scary. I’m afraid someone else won’t be able to hold up under his interrogation and will give you away.”

I was quiet for a moment. I hadn’t told anyone why we broke up. It was too humiliating.

I know my own flaws. I’m strong-willed, sensitive, and I can’t stand the pity in other people’s eyes

I tend to run away when things get hard. That’s why I’d taken the overseas assignment. Here, no one knew me. I had enough space and time to heal.

I thought for a moment, then spoke. “It’s fine. Whatever comes will come.”

It was just that I didn’t expect it to come so soon.

Leonardo was the client for my project. Which made sense-his family was Mafia. Of course they were involved in arms deals.

As the onsite rep, I had to give the technical briefing. The entire time, I kept my eyes fixed straight ahead, focused on my work. But I still couldn’t ignore the searing gaze on my back, burning like a

brand.

Soon, an hour had passed. I was parched. An assistant handed me a bottle of water. I was just about to take it when another hand appeared-long, distinct knuckles holding a cream-colored thermos. Leonardo’s voice came from above, a little hoarse. “Drink this. Honey water. Good for your throat. You’re used to it.”
