She Rejected the Mafia Heir, He Went Crazy Chapter 02

I was genuinely moved back then. Leonardo was a practical man. He said he wanted to buy a house and marry me, and he gave me his whole paycheck every month, keeping only a thousand dollars for himself.

Now the truth was out. I felt like I’d been slapped in the face. Everything was so ironic.

In the chat history, if the girl pouted and complained she had nothing to wear, Leonardo would have luxury brands send the latest collections straight to her door. When I looked at a slightly nicer dress, he subtly talked me out of it.

While I was agonizing over whether to spend two thousand dollars on a new tablet, Leonardo bought that girl a bag without batting an eye. I looked up the price. Three hundred thousand dollars. Exactly the amount Leonardo and I had scrimped and saved for three years.

I can’t describe what I felt in that moment. I couldn’t cry. But something was tearing through my body, threatening to rip me apart.

So I went and bought the same rare platinum bag. When I held it in my hands, I thought, So this is what a three-hundred-thousand-dollar bag feels like. So light. And so heavy.

The next morning, I came out of the bedroom. Leonardo had already made breakfast—the shrimp and chive dumplings I’d mentioned a couple days ago, fried golden and crisp. The pleating looked like he’d wrapped them fresh that morning.

How thorough. A rich young master willing to go to such lengths just to deceive me.

We sat across from each other. The silence was heavy.

Then Leonardo spoke. “If you really like the bag, keep it. We’ll save for the house again. I’ll start doing Uber Eats deliveries after work. But Emily—don’t ever say you don’t want to get married again. I can’t take it.”

My hand froze. I really couldn’t figure him out.

A Mafia heir, worth billions, with a mistress on the side. Yet he’d pretended to be poor for three years, lived in a rental apartment, ate discounted convenience food. What was he after?

I didn’t understand. But I didn’t ask. I hate conflict and arguing. To put it bluntly, I’m like a stubborn rock. If someone kicks me, I just roll away and find another spot to lie down. Same with relationships. Leonardo deceived me and betrayed me. I didn’t want to know why. I just wanted to get away from him.

After breakfast, I went to work as usual. I’m a systems engineer at a defense contractor.

At the regular meeting, my manager mentioned an overseas assignment. Triple salary, but I’d likely be stuck abroad for three to five years. Everyone who’d been eager backed off. Who doesn’t have family they’d miss? Who could handle being gone that long?

I looked around, quietly raised my hand, and said, “I’ll do it.”

After the meeting, she called me into her office. She frowned. “Emily, are you in trouble? If you need money, just ask. I’ll help if I can. Don’t throw away your future.”

I shook my head. “No. I really want to go.”

After a long pause, she sighed. “Are you sure? With your record, wait two more years and this position is yours. You’d have a brilliant future. But if you leave now, there won’t be a place for you when you come back.”

I smiled. “Thank you for everything, but I’ve made my decision.”

She shook her head helplessly, handed me the application form. I took it and left.

That evening, Leonardo saw me filling it out. He glanced at it, but only caught the word “Application.” He frowned. “What are you applying for?”
