I Cancelled Our Wedding After Seeing His Call Log Chapter 04

On the drive back, Sarah remained in the front passenger seat while David dropped her off first.

Sitting in the back row, I was actively messaging a landlord in France regarding a rental property.

“Come sit up front,” David spoke suddenly.

I didn’t even raise my head. “No need.”

He fell silent for a few seconds. “Suit yourself.”

Ignoring him entirely, I finalized the details for a beautiful, sunlit apartment and immediately transferred the security deposit.

When we walked through the door of our apartment, he retrieved a catalog from his briefcase and approached me.

“Take a look?”

Confused, I took it from his hands, only to realize it was a bridal lookbook for wedding gowns.

“Make a selection as soon as possible. The wedding is only a month away, and the tailors need time to prepare.”

He pointed directly to a gown heavily adorned with intricate, three-dimensional pear blossoms.

“I think this one looks quite nice.”

A flash of utter disdain crossed my eyes.

Pear blossoms—of course, Sarah’s favorite flower.

He truly managed to weave her into every single detail.

If this had happened in the past, I would have thrown a massive tantrum.

But now, I simply nodded with total composure.

“Sure, looks fine. Let’s go with that one.”

After all, I was leaving tomorrow morning.

What did a wedding a month from now have to do with me?

David seemed exceptionally pleased with my compliance, leaning down to press a rewarding kiss against my forehead.

“Good girl.”

“This is how you should be. I absolutely despise that sour, long-faced attitude from earlier today. Don’t let it happen again, alright?”

Leaving those words behind, he casually sauntered into the bathroom.

I immediately grabbed a disinfectant wipe, scrubbing at my forehead until the skin burned a bright, irritated red.

When the clock struck nine, David turned off the lights and climbed into bed right on schedule. His phone was placed face down, and his right earbud was firmly in place.

He didn’t seem to notice the entirely cleared vanity and bathroom shelves.

Nor did he spot the packed suitcase sitting right beside my nightstand.

Then again, except for Sarah, he seemed to treat the entire world with absolute apathy.

In the dead of night, however, a piercing shriek from the earbud abruptly woke me from my sleep.

Beside me, David bolted upright, his eyes snapping open as he roared frantically into his microphone, his voice visibly trembling.

“Sarah? What’s wrong?”

In the dead silence of the bedroom, I could faintly hear Sarah sobbing hysterically on the other end.

The man who prided himself on never showing emotion instantly lost his composure, throwing off the covers and sprinting out of the apartment.

The 9:00 PM rule meant absolutely nothing now.

His rigid sleep schedule could be instantly discarded the moment Sarah was involved.

There was no way I was going to follow him, but sleep escaped me completely.

Bored, I began scrolling through my phone, only to find the Columbia University campus forums completely blowing up.

[Some psycho snuck into the faculty housing complex! I think Sarah, the lit department assistant, is in danger!]

[She’s fine, she’s fine! I’m reporting live from the scene. The creep was climbing through her window, but Professor Harrison showed up right as he was about to break the door down!]

[The professor looked terrifying, like a rabid animal. He was single-handedly beating the living hell out of that stalker!]

[The police just arrived.]

I watched the text updates roll in, each post accompanied by vivid photographs that pierced through the darkness of my cold bedroom.

Eventually, someone uploaded a video clip.

Clicking play, I saw the man who constantly preached about rules acting completely possessed by rage.

He slammed his fists repeatedly into the masked intruder.

Only when the police officers physically pulled him away did he finally stop.

Then, he spun around to pull Sarah tightly into his embrace.

He buried her face securely against his chest, shielding her eyes from the gruesome, bloody scene.

“Don’t be afraid. I’m here.”

The video instantly went viral, trending across social media platforms, with countless comments praising how attractive a man looks when he fiercely protects his woman.

I stared at it for a long time, then calmly left a ‘like’ on the most popular comment wishing them a long and happy life together.

Then, I quietly exited the app.

David didn’t return for the rest of the night, which came as absolutely no surprise to me.

I slept dreamlessly until 6:00 AM.

Grabbing my pre-packed suitcase and all my essential documents, I took one final look at the wedding catalogs sitting on the table.

I set my apartment keys down on the entryway console.

And walked out without a single backward glance.

Upon reaching the airport, I pinned the announcement of my broken engagement to the top of my social media feed, then boarded the plane.

As the aircraft soared into the sky, I knew David and I would have absolutely nothing to do with each other for the rest of our lives.
