I Cancelled Our Wedding After Seeing His Call Log Chapter 03

When we arrived at the Harrison estate, Mrs. Harrison was already waiting anxiously outside the front door.

The moment Sarah stepped out of the car, she ran over to wrap her arm around the older woman’s, using a sweet, coaxing tone. “Professor! The wind is so strong out here, why did you come out yourself? Let’s head inside.”

Mrs. Harrison beamed with maternal affection.

“I was waiting for you, dear. I felt so guilty placing you under David’s supervision at the department. That boy has such an eccentric temper.”

Sarah stole a glance at the man standing beside her, noting the soft smile playing on his lips, and her ears flushed crimson.

“Professor Harrison is wonderful to me. I don’t feel slighted at all.”

The two conversed warmly as they walked toward the house.

Only after walking several yards did Mrs. Harrison seem to remember something, turning her head to look at me with a noticeably colder gaze.

“Oh, Chloe’s here too. Come inside quickly before you catch a cold.”

That was the extent of her acknowledgment.

David walked up beside me, keeping his eyes lowered as he frowned. “Are you in a bad mood?”

“No.”

I simply felt entirely detached.

He pressed his lips together.

“If something is going wrong at your job, I expect you not to bring that negative energy into this house. I have no desire to deal with a sulking face all evening.”

My hands clenched tightly into fists at my sides, the pressure painful against my palms, but the sheer absurdity of his statement eclipsed the ache.

For a brief, fleeting second, I had actually wondered if he was sensing my heartbreak.

Stopping dead in my tracks, I looked at him, the last remnants of affection draining from my eyes, replaced entirely by a profound stillness.

“If I’m unhappy, I will express it however I see fit. If you don’t like looking at it, then look away.”

“I am not your servant, and I have no obligation to cater to your whims at a moment’s notice.”

David’s mouth flattened into a hard, grim line, making no effort to hide his displeasure.

“Chloe, you’re an adult. We are about to get married, and I certainly don’t want a wife who is constantly governed by her emotions.”

I let out a mocking laugh.

“Then who exactly do you think would perfectly meet your standards?”

He seemed to ponder the question seriously, though I already knew the answer embedded in his heart.

“Regardless of anyone else, you are the only one who will be my wife.”

“But I truly think you could learn a thing or two from Sarah. She manages her emotions flawlessly, understand?”

I stared into his eyes for two long seconds before offering a faint, hollow smile.

“Fine.”

Once inside the main dining room, Mrs. Harrison pulled Sarah and David to sit directly on her left and right.

I consciously moved to a seat far enough away to ensure I wouldn’t disrupt their cozy dynamic.

Only after sitting down did I notice something.

There wasn’t a single dish on the table that I liked.

Mrs. Harrison was grinning from ear to ear, constantly piling food onto Sarah’s plate.

“Look how thin you are.”

“You need to take care of your body even while pursuing academic research. David specifically reminded me to prepare all your favorite dishes.”

Sarah smiled bashfully. “Thank you, Professor.”

Mrs. Harrison paused for a brief beat, turning a somewhat forced, awkward smile in my direction.

“Chloe, dear, I didn’t really know what you liked to eat, so just make do with what’s here.”

David plated a piece of sweet and sour pork with pineapple onto my dish.

“Next time, let me know what you want in advance, and I’ll have the staff prepare it.”

“You don’t really have any distinct preferences anyway.”

“Unlike Sarah, who loves everything sweet and sour—always reaching for things like pineapple pork and ribs, just like a child.”

I kept my eyes trained downward, staring blankly at the pork on my plate, which contained the very pineapples I was severely allergic to.

Five years.

We had been together for five full years.

What I liked and what I couldn’t touch required me to make a special announcement just for him to remember.

Every single syllable he uttered, recounting Sarah’s preferences with flawless precision, served as a direct mockery of my absolute failure.

Right then, my phone buzzed with a text notification. It was the flight confirmation from my supervisor.

Departure was scheduled for tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM.

My heart finally settled into total tranquility. I was free.

Throughout the entire dinner, I never once lifted my fork, and David never even noticed.

I merely acted as a silent spectator, watching the harmonious atmosphere shared between the three of them.

I couldn’t fit into their world, and I no longer had any desire to try.
