Chapter 8: A New Beginning

Trial day, the three of them looked hollowed out. Ashen. Dead inside.

The lawyer laid out the evidence piece by piece. They didn’t even have the strength to fight back anymore.

The recordings. The medical reports. The gambling account records. Solid proof. Every bit of it.

The ugliest part? Watching them eat each other alive.

“It was her! Stella, Stella-that snake-she planned the whole thing!”

Mark pointed at his wife like a madman.

“She said Mia’s gift couldn’t go to waste. She pushed Skyler into those streams. Money-that’s all she ever gave a damn about!”

Stella jumped up. “Bullshit! You gambled away everything this family ever had. You think we’d be here if you hadn’t?”

“Shut up! It’s her-it’s all Mia’s fault!”

Skyler threw a full-blown tantrum in court like the spoiled brat he was.

“She’s jealous! Always was. Couldn’t stand to see me succeed. Your Honor, I didn’t do anything!”

The whole place turned into a zoo.

Then she dropped back onto the bed.

The machine let out one long beep. Then nothing.

I walked out of the prison as the sun was setting. Warm light spilled over me.
