He lit up the screen. An anonymous email.

The subject line had only four words.

Who would email him this late?

Confused, he opened it.

The email had no body text, just two video attachments.

His little sister, Lyra, appeared in frame carrying snacks.

The phone clattered out of his hand onto the floor.

Shaking, he picked it up, up and opened the second video.

This one showed the lounge room from the wedding day.

His breath caught, a horrifying suspicion forming in his mind.

Sure enough, there it was.

Me, my eyes red when I learned the truth about the baby.

Serena, her face twisted with unhidden malice as she poured the gasoline.

Him, carrying Serena out, and the disappointment written in my eyes.

Me, watching his back as he left, my gaze calm as death.

A deafening crack.

A ball of rage seemed ready to explode out of his chest.

He’d been such a fool.

He’d raised his enemy right by his side, fed her, dressed her, doted on her for over a decade.

Boundless hatred swallowed his reason whole.

He stormed into the Pack punishment cell.

Serena lay passed out on the floor.

He roared, pulled out a dagger, and stabbed her again and again.

The girl jolted awake in agony.

Dazed and terrified, she dragged her bleeding body forward with everything she had.

Screaming.

“Help me!”

But no one would answer her anymore.

He moved like a demon come to collect a debt.

Wherever she crawled, his blade followed.

Until, finally, she couldn’t crawl anymore.

Lying in a pool of sticky blood, her eyes wide with terror, she stopped breathing forever.

Everything went still.

Like nothing had ever happened.

He dropped the dagger, expressionless.

Doused He doused every corner of the main house with gasoline.

Then dropped a lit lighter.

Flames roared up, swallowing everything fast.

He stumbled back to the room where my body lay, laughing as he wrapped his arms around my corpse.

“I’m sorry…”

His voice was strangely calm.

“I came to be with you.”

Heat licked at his skin, thick smoke choked his throat, his vision started to warp.

It should have been unbearable agony.

But he suddenly felt released.

I floated above it all, watching quietly.

The hundredth silver line on my back finally lit up completely.

Cold white moonlight paved a long road beneath my feet.

At the end of that road stood a gentle figure.

My mother.

She still looked the way she had in my memory, memory right before she died – died, except she wasn’t pale

or weak anymore.

She reached her hand out to me.

“Elara Let’s go home.”

I looked down, down for one last glance at Adrian in the fire.

He held my body like he’d finally gotten back something precious he’d lost.

Too late now.

I turned and walked into the moonlight.

The silver lines on my back dissolved, inch by inch.
