My Boyfriend Never Really Blocked His Ex Chapter 07

At the engagement party, Nathan stood by the head table, his anxiety mounting with every tick of his watch.

For the hundredth time, he fished out his phone, only to be met with the steady drone of a busy signal.

“Elena, pick up.”

He muttered a curse under his breath. His knuckles were white.

Traffic. It had to be traffic. She’s probably fixing her lipstick, cursing the highway.

He told himself that. But sweat beaded on his forehead.

A cold sense of dread coiled in his gut.

Most of the guests had arrived. The room was buzzing.

Then she walked in. Vanessa swept into the room in a stunning blood-red gown, her makeup immaculate, her heels sharp enough to cut.

She carried herself like the leading lady of the night.

A murmur of whispers instantly erupted through the crowd.

The whispers ignited.

“Who invited her?”

“Isn’t that the ex who assaulted his girlfriend and got arrested a few days ago?”

“Oh my god. Is she here to crash? The audacity.”

Nathan’s face went purple. Rage boiled in his chest.

“Ness! Are you out of your mind?!” He hissed through gritted teeth.

“This is my engagement party! Who do you think you’re trying to upset showing up like this? Do you actually think you’re the main character here?”

“I’ve told you a thousand times! It’s over! Stay away from me or I swear…”

Vanessa’s eyes welled up. She bit her lip hard to keep from crying, but her usual stubborn, spoiled streak flaring up as she lifted her chin defiantly..

“Fine! I don’t care!”

“I’m mad! I spent years teaching you how to be a boyfriend, and she just waltzes in and takes it all!”

“We were done!” Nathan shouted.

“You broke up with me!”

“I changed my mind!” Vanessa finally screamed.

“Don’t act like you can’t tell I’ve been hanging around all this time because I can’t let go… because I still love you!”

Nathan flung her hand away like he’d touched something filthy.

His eyes were stone cold.

“Too late.”

“I’m about to be a married man. That part of my life is over. I love Lena now.”

“No. No, Nathan!”

Vanessa broke down, sobbing. “You love me! You’re supposed to marry me!”

A collective gasp rippled through the ballroom.

The giant projection screens on stage lit up.

A slideshow of Nathan and Vanessa, tangled in each other’s arms, kissing, laughing, living their full, bright past, started looping.

And on the side screen, the text that should have read Bride: Elena Pearce was gone.

It now said Bride: Vanessa Corbin.

Nathan’s blood went ice cold. He whipped his head toward Vanessa, his eyes blazing red.

“What the HELL is this, Vanessa?!”

“I’ve put up with all your nonsense for years, out of respect for what we had. But this? On my engagement day?”

Vanessa went pale, frantically shaking her head.

“I didn’t do it! Nathan, I swear! I don’t know!”

“Then who the hell else?!” He stepped closer, animalistic. “Who else has those old photos?!”

He spun around, screaming at the event coordinator. “Fix it! Fix it now!”

She’s walking in any second!”

The coordinator scurried over, drenched in sweat, and glanced up at him tremblingly.

“Sir… I can’t change it.”

“Ms. Pearce gave the order herself.”

“She said to replace the bride with Miss Corbin.”
