Chapter 5 Healing Up

I looked up at the document and asked in disbelief, “You’re pinning everything on me?”

Another slap cracked across my face. Maxwell’s expression was twisted with fury. “If it wasn’t for you, the company would’ve gone public just fine! You deserve this!”

He grabbed my hand and tried to force me to sign. I fought back desperately and sank my teeth into his hand.

“Ah!” Maxwell screamed. The taste of blood filled my mouth.

Tiffany rushed to cradle his injured hand and then turned to glare at me. “Natalie, you really do have a death wish!” She grabbed a stick from nearby and swung it hard at me.

The bodyguards pinned me down so I couldn’t move. Pain shot through me like my bones were being ripped apart. When Tiffany saw me collapsed on the floor, she grabbed my hand to force my signature on the document.

Suddenly, the door slammed open with a loud crash.

My childhood friend, Julian Pierce, burst through the door with his guys. “Natalie!”

Julian shoved Tiffany aside with his foot and rushed over to help me up. “How did you know to come?” My voice came out weak.

“I saw your husband’s company was in trouble and you weren’t picking up your phone, so I got worried and came right over.” When Julian saw the bruises covering my body, his eyes turned red and he clenched his jaw tight.

Maxwell found the scene in front of him offensive. “Natalie, you’ve got no shame! Found your next guy this fast? Does he know how used up you are?”

Before Maxwell could finish talking, Julian kicked him hard and sent him crashing to the ground. “Keep running that filthy mouth and I don’t mind cutting your throat.”

Julian’s voice was ice cold with an edge of real menace, then he picked me up and carried me toward the door.

We’d reached the doorway when Maxwell’s voice came from behind us. “Natalie, I know you’re just throwing a tantrum. If you apologize right now and fix this mess with the company, maybe I’ll forgive you!”

His words almost made me laugh. I couldn’t understand how he could be so sure that after everything he’d done to hurt me, I’d still care about him. “Maxwell, let me make this clear. We’re divorced. And your company? You destroyed it with your own hands.”

Without waiting for his response, we turned and left.

After the company lost the bid, the stock price tanked, the cash flow dried up, projects ground to a halt, and partner companies started demanding contract cancellations left and right.

Maxwell was drowning in work at the office when Tiffany climbed onto his lap. “Maxwell, you’ve been working for days. You haven’t spent any time with me.”

The sweetness was gone. Maxwell found her annoying now. “Can’t you see I’m busy? You’re completely useless.”

Work had been crushing Maxwell for days, and he kept thinking about me without meaning to. He remembered how every time the company had a crisis, I was the one who fixed it. His regret kept growing.

Tiffany’s face changed when she heard that. “What’s that supposed to mean, Maxwell? You’re sick of me now? I’m carrying your baby!”

Maxwell couldn’t be bothered to sweet-talk her anymore. His face turned cold, and he snapped, “If you’ve got nothing to do, get out and stop bothering me!”

Resentment flashed in Tiffany’s eyes, and she stormed out.

Meanwhile, after a few days of rest, my body was healing up nicely.

Once Maxwell realized the company was on the brink of collapse, he started texting me every single day. His tone went from arrogant at first to desperate and begging later. “Natalie, if you handle this crisis, I’ll consider remarrying you.”

“I already kicked Tiffany out. Stop being so stubborn.”

“Natalie, I’m begging you. Please help me save my company!”

I ignored every single one of his pathetic messages.

After the divorce, I decided to go abroad to study.

Back in college, I’d given up my chance to study overseas for Maxwell’s sake and chose to help him run his company instead.

After the divorce, I told my dad about everything and felt terrible for having convinced him to invest in Sullivan Group in the first place.

I expected him to blame me, but he pulled me into his arms instead. “Natalie, don’t beat yourself up over this. Maxwell’s a piece of shit! Go ahead and leave the country. I’ll handle the company. Even if Sullivan Group collapses, it won’t drag our family business down with it.”

I thought if I kept ignoring Maxwell, he’d eventually give up. But I didn’t expect him to show up outside my apartment building and corner me there.

Maxwell held out a bouquet of flowers with a smile. “Natalie, I really messed up. Just give me one more

chance!”
