I didn’t dare answer.

Lucian glanced at me.

“You’re afraid of your mother?”

I refused to admit it.

“Who said I was afraid?”

The phone went silent for two seconds before it began ringing again.

This time, it was my father.

If I ignored them much longer, Serrano men would show up at Orsini headquarters armed to the teeth, and the resulting shootout would be dramatic enough to make national news.I took a deep breath and answered.

My mother’s voice was sharp enough to make my eardrums ache.”Livia, where are you?”

I stole a glance at Lucian.

“Shopping.”

“You went shopping at Orsini Group headquarters?”My scalp prickled.Had Ryan told on me?

My mother’s next words confirmed it.

“Ryan said you took the report confirming your pregnancy to Lucian.”I held the phone farther away from my ear.

She continued shouting.

“You’re pregnant?”

To be clear, she wasn’t upset because she was worried about me. She was furious because a pregnant daughter had considerably less value in a marriage alliance.

Marlowe heard the commotion and slowly approached my bedside.

I closed my eyes.

“Yes.”

Then I waited for my mother’s judgment.

There was silence on the other end of the line for three seconds.Then she burst into tears.”Have you lost your mind? What happened between you and Orsini?”

Before I could answer, Lucian took the phone from my hand.

“Mrs. Serrano, I invited Livia to stay as my guest at one of the Orsini estates. She may not be returning home for some time.”

My mother fell silent.

Then my father’s voice came through.

“Orsini, send Livia home.”

Lucian looked at me.

I immediately shook my head.

“She isn’t in a position to leave right now,” he said into the phone.

My father gave a cold laugh.

“You have no right to hold my daughter there, Orsini. Do you think you control the entire New York underworld?”

Lucian’s expression remained indifferent.

“I won’t restrict her freedom. But while she’s with me, she’ll be safe.”

I immediately grabbed his sleeve.

“I’m not leaving.”

A glass shattered on the other end of the line.

My mother’s voice shook with fury.

“Livia, just wait until I get my hands on you.”

The call ended.

I buried my face in the blanket.

I was doomed.

Marlowe patted my hand.

“Don’t be afraid. Lucian will protect you.”

Lucian cleared his throat.

“We’ll go back to my place first.”

I already knew the Orsinis were even wealthier than the Serranos. But when the car entered a gated enclave tucked into the wooded hills, I still couldn’t help letting out a quiet “wow.”The fresh air alone lifted my mood.

“Lucian, your house is perfect for a vacation.”

He loosened his tie.

“You’ll take the primary bedroom.”

I hugged a throw pillow and sat down on the couch.

“Where will you sleep?”

“The guest room.”

I frowned.

“If you’re that far away, what am I supposed to do when I get hungry in the middle of the night?”

Lucian looked at me.

“Where exactly do you expect me to sleep?”

I pointed toward the enormous bed in the primary bedroom and smiled.

“There’s plenty of room.”

His eyes darkened.

“Livia, don’t say things that could get you into trouble.”

I immediately shut my mouth.

That night, hunger woke me up, and I padded barefoot into the kitchen in search of food.

The refrigerator was packed with expensive ingredients, none of which I knew how to prepare.I found a container of strawberries and had just taken my first bite when Lucian spoke behind me.”Why aren’t you wearing a robe?”

I startled so badly that the strawberry slipped from my hand.

He walked over, lifted me into his arms, and carried me to the couch. Then he crouched in front of me and gently wiped my feet clean. His touch was unexpectedly careful.
