Late at night.

Fiona glanced at the clock. She put on a worried face. “Silas, it’s late. Serena still isn’t back. Should we go look for her?”

He was silent for a few seconds. He waved his hand.

“No. She’s just throwing a tantrum. She hasn’t worked in years. She doesn’t have much money. She’ll come back when she’s done.”

The doorbell rang.

“See?” Silas relaxed. He got up to open the door.

“Serena—”

The deliveryman stood there. “Mr. Sterling? Urgent local delivery. Please sign.”

Silas stared at the envelope. A bad feeling crept in.

He signed. He opened it.

The color drained from his face.

The first page was a court summons. Divorce proceedings.

Then the divorce agreement. Both names were signed.

Then a medical record.

Termination of pregnancy.

His hands shook. He dialed her number.

“Sorry, the number you’ve dialed is busy…”

He opened WhatsApp.

“Serena. Stop this. Answer the phone.”

Red exclamation mark. “Message sent but declined.”

He stared at it. His face went white. His lips trembled.

He remembered her text. He thought she was joking.

It was real.

The papers slipped from his hands.

Fiona noticed his expression. She leaned in. “Silas? What’s wrong?”

He didn’t answer. His eyes were empty.

She picked up the papers. She read them. She was quiet for a few seconds.

“Silas, don’t panic. Maybe this is Serena’s revenge. Maybe she just wants to hurt you. Make you regret it.”

His eyes flickered. “You think?”

“Of course,” she said. “She loves you too much to leave. She probably just wanted to scare you.”

His eyes lit up.

Right. It had to be a bluff. She was just trying to make him worry. To make him come after her.

“I’ll find out.”

He grabbed his keys and ran.
