Pick A Number, He Said, I Picked Divorce Chapter 04

Pick A Number, He Said, I Picked Divorce Chapter 04

The next morning, I opened the door.

Fiona was crying in Silas’s arms. He patted her back.

“Don’t cry. If it were here, it wouldn’t want you to be this sad.”

She cried harder. “The psychic said that for it to be reborn as a human, we need to find the best feng shui spot.” She looked up at me. “Serena, the psychic said your mother’s grave has perfect feng shui.”

I stopped. My voice went cold.

“No. My mother’s grave. Your dog doesn’t get near it.”

Fiona turned to Silas, hurt on her face. “Since we can’t agree, let’s draw blind boxes.”

She sniffled, got up, and took out a few boxes.

“Whatever we draw, we’ll do.”

I laughed in disbelief. My mother’s ashes were in a cemetery. Why did we need to draw blind boxes to decide what happened to her grave?

Silas looked conflicted. After a few seconds, he leaned in. “Serena, she’s upset. Just go along with her. For now. We won’t actually do it.”

My mother wasn’t a toy to amuse some girl.

Before I could say a word, Fiona drew. She unfolded the paper. Her eyes lit up.

“East side of the cemetery. Prime plot.”

Silas looked at me. “You draw too.”

I reached in. I unfolded it.

Three words: “Sewer.”

Silas frowned. “Who put that in? This is ridiculous. Serena, since we drew the sewer, we should follow through.”

I couldn’t believe it.

Didn’t he just say they wouldn’t actually do it?

“Silas. Don’t forget. My mother died saving you.”

His face shifted. His eyes darted away. “We drew it. We can’t back out just because we don’t like the result.”

He called the cemetery, right in front of me.

“Move Ms. Lancaster’s mother’s ashes out. Dispose of them in the sewer.”

I went cold. My eyes went red.

“Silas. If you touch my mother’s grave today, I will never forgive you.”

I ran out of the house.

I stumbled into the cemetery. It was already done. Her ashes had been poured into the sewer. Gray-white streaks floated in the filth.

I threw myself down. My knees hit the concrete. I didn’t feel it. I reached into the filthy water, trying to gather her remains. The water was cold and foul. My stomach turned.

I couldn’t get it back. I couldn’t hold it.

Tears fell. “Mom… I’m sorry…”

My hands were bleeding. I could only hold a little bit of ash.

My phone rang.

It was my lawyer.

“Ms. Lancaster. The lawsuit is filed. We have a hundred percent chance of winning.”
