He Waited for Me at the Border, I Already Left the Country Chapter 05

The knife hit the floor with a sharp clang that made my ears ring.

For a few seconds, the hallway went silent.

My mouth tasted like blood, and half my face burned.

Adrian lowered his head and stared at his own hand, as if he had only just realized he had hit me

“Elena… I didn’t mean to.”

I pushed myself up from the floor and stared at him.

“You didn’t mean to? Adrian, do you hear yourself?”

“You’re probably thrilled inside. You had a fool like me cooking and cleaning for you from morning

to night for eight years.”

“You never loved me. From beginning to end, she was the only one in your heart.”

His lips parted, but nothing came out.

Sienna poked her head out from behind him, her voice shrill and wounded. “She tried to kill me! Adrian, you saw it. Take me to the ER and call the police. She’s insane!”

Adrian frowned and looked from her to me.

“What exactly happened?”

Sienna stammered, “I just came over to talk to Elena and Mrs. Hart. I had no idea she would lose

control like that…”

And just as expected, he hesitated again.

I let out a small laugh, and tears fell with it.

Looking at that face.

The face I had chased for eight years, waited for eight years, begged for eight years.

“Save it for the police.”

I turned and got into the ambulance.

The ER light was on.

I leaned against the hallway wall, all the strength drained out of me.

My face stung fiercely, the corner of my mouth had split open, and blood slid down my chin.

But I had no energy to care about any of it.

My eyes stayed fixed on that door.

A nurse came out and handed me a stack of forms.

“Are you next of kin? We need you to fill out the admissions and insurance paperwork first.”

I braced myself against the wall and started downstairs, my legs so weak they felt like they were giving out beneath me.

A hand reached over and took the forms from me.

Adrian did not dare look at me. His voice was very low. “Wait here. I’ll go.”

I wanted to stop him, but I was too late.

He walked quickly, his combat boots striking the floor as his back disappeared around the corner.

Suddenly, I remembered many years ago.

The first time my father was ERized, Adrian had been the same way.

He rushed to handle the paperwork, rushed to pick up the medication, rushed to find the doctor.

He ran back and forth until his forehead was covered in sweat.

Back then, I had stood in the hallway watching him and thought, This is the one.

Now I was still standing in a ER hallway.

Only this time, I shook my head.

The police arrived faster than I expected.

“Who is Elena? Did you file the report?”

I straightened up with one hand on the wall. “I did. Sienna came to my home and deliberately provoked my mother. I have security footage and other evidence.”

The younger officer took out a notebook and started writing.

The older detective glanced at me, his eyes pausing on my face for two seconds.

“That injury on your face…”
