He Waited for Me at the Border, I Already Left the Country Chapter 04

He Waited for Me at the Border, I Already Left the Country Chapter 04

For an entire week, he never sent me a single message.

He probably still thought I would go back on my own once I cooled down, just like before.

The first time we met was at a military social event organized by the base.

He had been in civilian clothes, and when people kept pushing drinks on me, he foolishly stepped in front of me and took glass after glass in my place.

Later, when I was ERized with acute gastroenteritis, he rushed back overnight from a training exercise and stood outside my room with soup in his hand.

I was the one who fell first.

I was the one who pursued him.

Was the person who fell first always the one who lost the worst?

That day after work, Sienna blocked my way.

“Elena, let’s talk.”

I tried to walk around her. “We have nothing to talk about.”

She grabbed my wrist, her voice full of smug satisfaction.

“Adrian bought me a condo. The title is under my name only.”

“And what started as pretend has become real. We’re going to City Hall the day after tomorrow to get the marriage license. Aren’t you going to congratulate me?”

I yanked my hand away hard.

She used the momentum to fall to the ground.

“Elena! I just wanted to talk to you. Why would you shove me?”

People immediately gathered around us, pulling out their phones to record.

She lay on the ground, tears appearing on command.

Adrian rushed over. When he saw her scraped arm and knees, he shot me a vicious glare.

“Elena, after all these years, I’ve never treated you badly. Sienna has always been strong. What did you do to make her cry like this?”

“If you’re going to act like this, then maybe we really are done.”

Standing in the middle of the crowd, I said, “Adrian, we broke up a long time ago.”

He gave a cold laugh. “Elena, you can’t live without me.”

Couldn’t I?

I watched his back and clenched my fists.

No one in this world was someone you could not live without.

But I never expected someone to post the video online that day.

The title read: [Side Chick Harasses Officer’s Fiancée, Attacks Her in Public.]

The comment section was full of people attacking me.

“They’re about to get a marriage license, and she still has no shame?”

“I heard her dad died young. Maybe she cursed him too.”

“His childhood sweetheart already got the proposal, and this woman is still clinging to him?”

I became the other woman.

Sienna became the victim.

That same day, my employer sent me a suspension notice.

My hands were shaking with anger when I called Adrian. “Why didn’t you explain?”

His careless voice came through again. “Just wait.”

“Wait for what? For my reputation to be completely destroyed?”

On the other end, I heard Sienna sigh. “Forget it. I’ll explain. Otherwise people will start attacking me.”

“We’re just so close, Adrian? No one understands what we have.”

Adrian’s attitude hardened, his voice cold.

“Elena, just wait two days. People will forget about it soon enough.”

My chest burned so badly I could hardly breathe.

As if tossing me a scrap, he added, “How about this? After the attention dies down, I’ll take you home to meet my parents.”

I held the phone, trembling all over. “Get lost. Get the hell away from me.”

Before he could say anything else, I hung up.

Wait.

What exactly was I supposed to wait for?

I never expected Sienna to show up at my home under the guise of an apology to provoke my mother.

“Mrs. Hart, the truth is Adrian and I have been together for a long time. You should talk to Elena and tell her to stop clinging to him.”

“Her job is suspended now, and her name is ruined. Honestly, you two should just move away.”

My mother stood up abruptly, her lips trembling. “What did you say? Who is clinging to whom?”

Sienna smiled with open satisfaction. “Your daughter, obviously. Pathetic little thing.”

“Shut up!” I rushed toward her.

“Mom. Mom!”

My mother’s eyes rolled back, and her whole body collapsed backward.

A neighbor called an ambulance. Paramedics arrived and began emergency treatment.

I sank to the floor, watching my mother lie there motionless, and something in my mind snapped.

I stood up and grabbed a paring knife from the coffee table.

Sienna screamed and backed away.

Adrian appeared out of nowhere and stopped me, clamping his hand around my wrist as I held the knife.

“Elena! Calm down!”

I could not break free. My eyes were bloodshot. “I can’t calm down! If anything happens to my mother, I’ll make her pay with her life!”

Sienna hid behind him. “I came here to apologize! How is it my fault that her mother is sick?”

I raised the knife and tried to move forward.

A sharp crack echoed as his palm struck my face.

My ears rang. My mouth filled with the taste of blood.

Adrian looked at me, and for one brief second, panic flickered in his eyes.

I lifted my head and smiled at him.

“Adrian, let’s break up.”
