The Comments Said the Heartthrob Confessed Wrong, So I Rejected Him Chapter 02

[I CAN’T. They’re so freaking cute. King and queen of campus, literally soulmates. Nobody makes Brynn blush like that except him.]

[Good thing the backwater girl didn’t pull that mask stunt again. Like okay, so he’s a little tempted—whatever. It won’t go anywhere. He’s always gonna come back to our girl.]

[Finally rid of that trash. He’s actually clean now. You two better love each other like your lives depend on it!]

I didn’t really buy what those comments were saying.

Because I knew what I wanted.

Even if I had taken off my mask. Even if Griffin had fallen for me at first sight.

I wouldn’t have dated him.

I had better things to do—library time, picking up more shifts.

When I came back from washing up, my roommates were still talking about Griffin.

The second I shut the door, their voices cut off.

Brynn exchanged looks with the other two.

Then one of them cleared her throat.

“So, Sage… we have a question.”

I nodded.

She drew out her words, voice dripping with meaning. “So Griffin sends you flowers and you don’t bother telling Brynn immediately? What—if we hadn’t figured it out, were you just gonna hold onto them like they were yours?”

“Come on. Griffin’s hot and loaded. For someone like you, landing him would be the biggest come-up ever. Sage… you weren’t seriously thinking that, were you?”

I didn’t answer right away.

I turned to Brynn instead. She was smiling, slow and smug, watching me from across the room.

And I got it.

This was really her question.

“Brynn. I called three times. You hit ignore on all of them. Then you blocked me.”

“I’m not skipping work for you. And I didn’t text because my phone was completely dead.”

I pulled my beat-up old flip phone out of my bag. The one that wouldn’t turn on no matter how hard you pressed the button.

Brynn barely glanced at it, then gave a light laugh.

“Sage, I never doubted you. Look at you, getting all serious.”

She turned to the others.

“I know you two are just looking out for me. But come on—Griffin Hayes? Into Sage? She’s so out of his league. That’s not his type at all.”

They snorted and nodded along.

“Right? Griffin only sees Brynn. The rest of us might as well be furniture.”

I put my phone back without a word, found my charger, and plugged it in.

As soon as it powered on, a friend request popped up.

I opened it.

Unknown profile pic. The note said two words.

[Griffin.]
