The Don’s Throwaway Wife Chapter 04

The Don’s Throwaway Wife Chapter 04

The noise coming from the master bedroom didn’t die down until dawn.

When I opened the door the next morning, discarded clothes and torn foil wrappers littered the floor.

The sheets were crumpled, stained with messes I couldn’t bear to name. They’d been my favorite

set.

The housekeeper lingered awkwardly in the hallway, unsure what to say.

I glanced at the wrecked bed and shrugged.

“Throw all of it away.”

Mia sat at the bar feeding Dante warm milk, dark hickeys marking her collarbone.

“I’m so sorry, Elara,” she murmured. “We made such a mess of your room.”

I kept trimming the potted plants out on the balcony, not uttering a single word.

I used to spiral sick just thinking about him bringing women home.

Now I feel nothing at all. It’s lighter, this numbness.

Dante, though, seemed irritated by my silence.

“Where’s the pendant I gave you?”

My pruning shears froze for half a second.

I’d completely forgotten about it.

I set the shears down, unlocked the safe, and pulled out a velvet jewelry box. Inside rested a phoenix

pendant studded with rubies, polished bright from years of careful care.

He’d given it to me back when we first started dating.

“Elara, this is for the future Don’s wife,” he’d told me then.

For ten years, I’d guarded it like my most precious treasure.

Now I held it out and placed it into Mia’s palms.

“It suits you. You’ll wear it far better than I ever could.”

The wine glass slipped out of Dante’s grasp and shattered across the tile floor.

“Elara, what the hell game are you playing?”

I stayed quiet. He was never satisfied, no matter what I did.

Once, he’d kept a mistress in a downtown apartment and ordered me to hand over my rare orchid

collection to her.

That night, I’d ripped every single plant in the greenhouse to shreds.

He’d screamed at me in front of his entire crew, shame burning hot in my throat.

“Elara, do you have to be so petty? It’s just a flower!”

Now I’d handed over his most cherished pendant, and he still found fault.
