As soon as he finished speaking, Sofia’s tears started again.

“You never used to treat me like this.”

Alessio’s brow furrowed.

Sofia seemed to sense an opening, her voice dropping to a wounded whisper.

“You used to say I understood you better than anyone.”

“You hated the arranged marriage. You hated being forced to marry her.”

“The day you got drunk, you were the one who held my hand and said you wished I was the bride.”

The living room fell silent.

My hand tightened on the handle of my suitcase.

Alessio’s expression changed.

Sofia looked at me, her eyes filled with a cornered sort of resentment.

“Verona, I really didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“Alessio was drunk that day. He thought I was someone else, and he put the ring on my hand himself.”

She raised her left hand.

It was bare now.

But she held it up as if displaying some kind of proof.

“I knew he married you. I knew I had to step back.”

“So I went abroad for two years. I never bothered you.”

“But now you’re blaming me for everything. I’m a victim in this, too.”

Alessio spoke, his voice deep and cutting.

“Sofia.”

Sofia looked at him.

“Am I wrong?”

She took two steps into the room, rain dripping from the hem of her dress onto the floor.

“Alessio, if you really didn’t care about me, why did you hold my hand on your wedding day?”

“Why did that ring end up on my finger?”

“Why is it that for the past two years, for every Ricci gala, every charity event, every business dinner, I was the first person your mother called?”

She turned to me, her eyes flashing.

“Verona, I didn’t steal anything from you. Some things were never yours to begin with.”

Her voice was soft.

But the words were uglier than any of her previous explanations.

Because she was telling the truth.

So many things had never been mine.
