My Best Friend Slept With My Mafia Husband Chapter 07

My Best Friend Slept With My Mafia Husband Chapter 07

When the shard cut open my wrist, my mind sank into chaos.

In that brief second, I said goodbye to my marriage.

I also said goodbye to the friendship I had guarded for years.

Perhaps I should have seen this double betrayal long ago.

But waiting until today made the despair even worse.

Just as I was ready to welcome death, the door of the private room was kicked open.

A familiar figure rushed in.

Behind him came a group of bodyguards in black suits, like judgment descending in the middle of the night.

The man gathered me into his arms, his voice almost out of control.

“Why would you do this?”

“Virelle, I won’t let you die.”

I had no strength to see him clearly.

No strength to answer.

All I smelled was the cold cedar on his body.

Then I passed out completely.

When I opened my eyes again, I saw Cassian Morvane.

My first love.

The boy who had lived next door to me before I came to New York for college.

The man who later became Don Cassian, the mafia boss of Chicago’s underworld.

He sat beside my hospital bed, the sleeves of his black shirt rolled to his forearms, faint blood still staining the backs of his hands.

I was not surprised.

Cassian had once said that if Alarion ever betrayed me, he would take me away at once.

Now, he had kept his promise.

He had seen the couple video Alarion and Ismeria filmed together.

He could not help sneering.

“Don Veyne is certainly devoted.”

“Even at the last moment of his life, he had to hold his mistress’s hand.”

After saying that, he reached out and tapped my forehead.

The gesture was not heavy, but the fear behind it could not be hidden.

“And you.”

“No matter how bad things get, you don’t gamble with your life.”

“Wouldn’t that only make it easier for them?”

I rubbed my forehead and lowered my lashes.

Sometimes, what they said was true.

I had always been protected by Alarion and Ismeria.

I thought I was the luckiest Donna in all of New York.

As if without them, I could not even take care of myself.

So after suffering their betrayal, I had planned to end everything and stop the sudden pain.

But thinking about it now, I could still live without them.

I could even live better.

I took a deep breath and forced myself to steady.

“I won’t do it again.”

“By the way, how did you get there so quickly?”

Cassian shrugged.

“Ever since I found out that plane almost went down, I’ve had people protecting you in secret.”

“Good thing I like meddling.”

“Otherwise, I would never have seen you again.”

As he spoke, his expression turned lonely.

I remembered years ago, when he and Alarion had pursued me almost at the same time.

Back then, Cassian had not yet become the true head of the Morvane

family, but he already had a ruthlessness that made the entire Chicago underworld wary of crossing him.

Once, he sent his family’s bodyguards to follow me and ask around about my whereabouts.

When I found out, I had a huge fight with him.

I cursed him for meddling.

I cursed him for invading my privacy.

After that, he disappeared from my world completely, as if he had never existed.

Only now did I understand.

That had not been control.

It had been worry.

Ashamed, I smiled and thanked him countless times.

Cassian took care of me until I was discharged.

He arranged for me to stay at a private recovery clinic under the Morvane family’s name, with bodyguards stationed outside twenty-four hours a day.

Doctors came to check on me every day.

The family lawyers handled my divorce agreement and every problem that followed.

He found every possible way to make me smile and took me out to clear my head.

During those days, Alarion and Ismeria took turns calling me.

They sent countless messages too.

The old me would have been grateful that they cared.

Now, I could not even be bothered to look.

A love shared by three people was too crowded.

I quit.
