On Our Wedding Night, She Told Me My Husband Will Betray Chapter 08

She froze. Her mouth stopped moving. Her hands stilled at her sides.

A faint pink crept across her pale cheeks.

“You — you!”

She flickered once and vanished.

By the time Ethan was released and returned to the Shaw estate, the whole property had been seized.

He found out I’d come home and came straight here.

I wasn’t going to answer the door. But he got on his knees on the front step and wouldn’t leave.

I went outside.

He was kneeling at the gate when I pushed it open. When he saw me, he started to get up and come in.

I took one step back. He stopped.

“Ellie. We lost everything.”

I stood there and waited.

“I have to leave this house.”

His face was carved with regret.

“What I did to you. I need to say this properly. I’m sorry.”

He went to his knees again.

I watched him without blinking.

“The video. That was on me. I thought you went after Lily because you were angry I asked about the PhD spot.”

Listening to him, something cold and slow moved through my chest.

This was what he’d been doing all along. Using my love to take whatever he wanted.

“Ellie. I’m sorry.”

He raised his head and his eyes were wet. “I’m not asking for forgiveness. I already had the video taken down. I was wrong.”

“I just found out. The whole thing was Lily’s setup. She staged everything and pinned it on you. I” —

I almost laughed.

“I won’t forgive you. You were there, Ethan. That night. You were standing right there.”

“You watched me fall apart. You helped them do it. And you were supposed to be the one who saved me.”

“You make me sick.”

He looked stunned. Empty.

“What gave you the right?”

I couldn’t stop myself. I hit him across the face.

“You blamed me without checking. Without asking. What gave you the right to do that to me?”

I was screaming and then crying, and both at once.

He crept forward. “Ellie. Hit me again if it helps. I deserve it.”

“You’ve been wrong since the beginning.”

“Wrong not to end things with me if you had feelings for her. Wrong to let me believe we were fine while you were wrapped around someone else. Wrong to ask your girlfriend for favors that benefited the girl you actually wanted. Wrong to forget what day it was when you handed me that drink.”

“Every single time you chose her, did you even think about what that made me?”

“No,” he said, fast and loud. “That’s not what it was.”

“Then what was I? Just a convenient player in your little game?”

His mouth moved. Nothing came out.

During this whole stretch of time, Ethan and Lily had moved, looked, felt like a couple.

He forgot my birthday. He leveraged my PhD spot for her future.

He handed me a drink she’d mixed on the one day of the month he used to know by heart.

He had me filmed and humiliated, then told me not to be difficult about it.

Every wound, every cut added up to the same truth: whatever we’d had was already gone.

“Ethan. Go home. We’re done.”

He stared.

“Ellie, please” —

He lurched to his feet and tried to push through the gate.

“I know I was wrong. But can’t we work through this? I’m done with Lily. We were never anything.”

I looked at him steadily. “Never anything.”

“Never anything, and you showed up for her every time. You forgot my birthday for her. You humiliated me for her.”

“But I apologized. And we’re already broke, so” —

“Ha.” Flat and cold.

“An apology doesn’t fix this. Stay away from me. Don’t come back.”

He shook his head slowly. Still not ready to let go.

“After what you did, there’s nothing left between us.”

“And the Shaws are broke now. The whole point of this engagement is gone.”

“Also, someone told me what you’ve been doing to me. Every bit of it. I promised her I was done with you.”

His eyes went red. He slammed his fist against the gate.

“Who? Who is she? Why is Ellie listening to her?”

A sigh left me. “Someone who matters.”

“She said you’d keep hurting me. She said”—
“No,” Ethan broke in. “I swear I won’t. Not ever again.”
“You already have.”
“Come near me again, and I’m calling the police.”
That finally did it. His hands fell. He stood there, deflated.
