I went back inside and closed the door on the whole world.

The ghost reappeared, trailing after me in silence.

“Mommy.”

She finally said it.

I turned around and she threw herself into my arms.

“Mommy. You’re free. I’m so happy.”

“I’m sorry I lied. You’re my mom. I just missed you so much. That’s the only reason I came.”

“And I love you more than anything. I just want you to be happy.”

I held her close and ran my fingers through her hair.

“I wasn’t trying to trick you. Grandma said you listen to her more than anyone, so I just… borrowed her voice for a little while.”

“I can’t touch anyone else. I couldn’t do anything except keep you away from him.”

Crying, I pressed a kiss into her hair.
