It was probably the most torturous night of Soren Shaw’s life.

Hours dragged by.

Watching the steady rise and fall of her breathing in bed, he finally exhaled.

When the doctor arrived, he looked like absolute hell.

He didn’t give a damn about appearances.

Soren grabbed a bath towel and wrapped Mila Hart up tight.

Not an inch of skin showing. Only then did he let the doctor into the bedroom.

After treatment, she stabilized.

She was sleeping deeply now.

“Fortunately, the drug levels in Miss Hart’s system were low.”

“Once she wakes up, she should be fine.”

Hearing this, Soren finally relaxed.

After seeing the doctor out, he returned to the bedroom.

Standing there, watching her, fear crashed through him again.

He’d just missed her so damn much today.

Found out she was at a group dinner and went after her without a second thought.

Never imagined he’d walk into that scene.

The memory of Ryan Mitchell laying hands on her made his vision go red.

Before bringing her home, he’d confronted Ryan.

“My buddy gave it to me. Told me after tonight, Mila would be devoted to me forever.”

“I got greedy for a second and spiked her drink.”

“But I never meant to hurt her, I just—”

He didn’t get to finish.

Another fist connected.

After scooping her into his arms, Soren shot Ryan a glacial look.

“You touched her. You know what comes next.”

“You’ll be getting a Cease and Desist Letter. And that’s just the start.”

Silence filled the room.

Soren stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows, jaw tight.

He couldn’t let himself think about it.

What would’ve happened if he’d been even a few minutes later.

He couldn’t. Not ever again.

Even if he had to force her, he was keeping Mila by his side.

Soren’s mind drifted back.

To the night he’d carried her out of the bar.

Ryan had called out to him, blocking his path, expression unreadable.

All blind confidence. A young guy who didn’t know any better.

“Mr. Shaw, you look way older than us.”

“Honestly? You and Mila aren’t from the same world.”

“So I’m telling you—drop it. You two don’t fit.”

Soren studied Ryan for a long moment.

Then let out a soft, derisive laugh.

“You’re competing with me?”

“So what if I am?”

Ryan’s brows knitted, hostility radiating off him.

Soren looked completely unruffled.

“You hesitated to take a drink for her. How exactly do you plan to protect her?”

“Yeah, I’m a lot older than Mila. I don’t see that as a problem.”

“Money. Power. And yeah—sex. Anything she wants, I can give her.”

Ryan’s body jerked at that.

Soren’s lips curved, steady and sure.

“She’s mine. That’s final.”

In the darkness, Soren’s jaw tightened.

His gaze fell on the woman in bed.

Tender. Devoted. And completely his.
