This was my first visit to Soren Shaw’s office.

The front desk led me toward the top floor, mentioning almost offhand that he owned the whole skyscraper.

No surprise he’d tossed money at me so recklessly all those years ago.

Some people really operated on an entirely different tier of wealth.

The elevator doors slid open with a soft ding.

The second my eyes met Soren’s, I froze.

Backlit by the glass wall, his sharp features looked even more severe.

This was him in his professional element.

An invisible fist squeezed tight around my heart.

He’d just wrapped up a meeting.

A group of senior executives trailed behind him, older than him by decades, yet none of them could match his presence.

Like he was born to command.

A beat of silence fell over the hallway.

Someone swept me with an obvious, scrutinizing glance, his voice thick with curiosity.

“Mr. Shaw, who’s this?”

Their unmasked stares were impossible to brush off.

Soren’s dark gaze landed on me, lingering for a second longer than necessary.

Then, almost imperceptibly, he shifted—blocking me from their view.

“A friend.”

His voice was flat, dismissive.

I blinked, caught off guard.

Why hadn’t he called me his sister’s classmate instead?

“Sir, this young lady says she’s here to drop off your iPad,” the receptionist chimed in.

Soren gave a brief nod.

“Understood. Show her to my office.”

He hit the elevator button again, clearly about to head elsewhere.

I hesitated, then handed the iPad to the receptionist and forced a polite smile.

“Since I’ve delivered it, I’ll get going. You’re busy.”

But the moment I turned—

A firm grip caught my arm.

Soren’s voice was low, right against my ear.

“Did I say you could leave?”

I stopped cold.

Up close, I caught the faint scent coming off him—something crisp and clean, like pine in snow.

For a split second, every coherent thought slipped away.

The spot where his fingers hummed with a sharp, electric heat, rippling a shudder all the way through my frame.

Then he let out something that sounded almost like a sigh.

“Go wait for me. We need to talk.”
