He Deleted My Number After 972 Messages of Love Chapter 06

I’d been looking forward to the seat rearrangement more than anything.

When Friday finally rolled around, I let out a long, relieved breath.

Between classes, everyone’s chatter revolved around the new transfer student joining us.

“Is someone transferring into our senior year this far into the school year?”

“Yeah, I overheard the teachers talking about it in the office. It’s a guy, and I snuck a peek at his picture. Dude is seriously attractive.”

“How good-looking? Better than Jesse?”

“He’s roughly just as attractive as Jesse, honestly.”

“Oh, that makes our total class enrollment an even number, so nobody will have to sit alone anymore.”

I barely paid their conversation any mind. As long as I could put some distance between myself and Jesse, I didn’t care who my new desk partner turned out to be.

By late afternoon, the gloomy sky that had hung overhead all day finally opened up into rain.

It was my assigned day for end-of-day classroom cleanup duty, so I left school almost an hour after everyone else.

I was just about to walk out of the academic building when I realized the rain showed no sign of letting up. I hadn’t brought an umbrella, so I lingered under the main entrance overhang, waiting for it to slow down.

Jesse and Chloe soon came into view, jogging back from the athletic field. Jesse had draped his jacket over Chloe’s head to shield her from the rain.

Chloe pulled out a couple of napkins, stood on her tiptoes, and dabbed at his soaked hair.

“I’m so sorry, seriously,” she rambled. “It’s my fault for dragging you over to feed the feral cats out here, you got completely soaked because of me.”

Jesse tilted his head slightly away. “It’s okay. I’ve got it.”

The rain picked up harder, and the security guard trundled over carrying a big ring of keys to usher everyone off campus.

“I’m clocking out for the night, and we’re locking the school building up,” he called out. ” You three need to get on your way home immediately.”

The bus stop was a decent walk away, and we’d be completely soaked by the time we got there.

My gaze drifted toward the security booth near the school gates—its extended roof created a small covered spot perfect for waiting out the rain. I slung my backpack tight against my chest and darted out into the pouring rain.

“Sadie.”

I thought I heard Jesse call my name faintly, but the sound got swallowed up instantly by the drumming rainfall. I told myself I must’ve imagined it.

It was evening rush hour, and my Uber app showed an estimated wait of over thirty minutes. I sighed glumly, silently hoping the wind wouldn’t pick up—otherwise the thin overhang wouldn’t block the rain at all.

Chloe and Jesse walked over wearing disposable rain ponchos shortly afterward.

The rain came down harder now, along with strong gusts of wind. Cold drops blew sideways under the overhang and hit my skin.

I pressed myself back as far as I could, but my clothes were soaked through within minutes.

Jesse lifted his eyes toward me and started to pull off his own poncho.

He’d only taken two steps forward when a sharp ripping sound cut out from behind him.

Chloe blinked up at him with an innocent expression. “Oops, I accidentally tore my poncho. Jesse, can I have yours instead? Please? I get cold so easily.”

Jesse froze stiff where he stood, his back rigid. He clutched the poncho in his hands for several long seconds before holding it out to her.

“Aww, you’re the sweetest boyfriend ever!” she gushed. ” I can tie this torn poncho around my shoes to stop my footwear from getting soaked too. Rainwater is really grimy, and I don’t want any of it getting on my skin.”

She wrapped herself up snugly from head to toe in his poncho, then turned and smiled at me.

“Don’t I look like a dorky little bear all wrapped up like this? Sadie, scoot back further against the wall if you can, you won’t get nearly as wet.”
