My Superpower Was Hearing Lies And My Weakness Was Believing Him Chapter 05

The baby survived. The liver cells engrafted, and the child would develop normally.

Nathan should have felt relieved. Instead, he was lost.

That ringing in his head… what was it?

“Nathan.” Vanessa’s eyes were red. “Thank you for staying with me through all this.”

He looked at her, his tone softening. “You said the baby needed a father. It’s what I had to do. Rest now. I’m going to check on Emily.”

Ignoring her disappointed protests, he left the room.

In the hallway, he ran into the lead surgeon.

“Mr. Cole,” the doctor said, “Ms. Hart had a miscarriage two weeks ago. She didn’t report it before the operation. That puts her at extremely high risk for complications.”

The words hit Nathan like a freight train. “Miscarriage? When—”

He stopped.

Two weeks ago.

That was the day he’d gotten the call from Vanessa and left Emily alone. She’d been nauseous and pale, but he’d brushed it off as a stomach bug.

He remembered that day. The day Emily found out about Vanessa and the baby.

At the time, terror had consumed him. Not just the fear of losing her, but the secret he’d been too ashamed to share.

He hadn’t thought clearly. He’d just tried to fix things, to smooth it over. He never even noticed how white her face was.

He’d lost his child. Their child.

Regret and grief crashed over him, wave after wave.

A child. His fingers curled into the chart, turning white.

“Mr. Cole?” the doctor asked. “Are you all right?”

Nathan couldn’t speak.

He’d believed they could never have children.

His sperm count was low, less than five percent chance of natural conception. When Vanessa told him she was pregnant, he’d felt a flicker of hope, and immediately hated himself for it.

He planned to keep the baby and slowly bring Emily around. Let her accept the child as her own.

But in his desperate scheming, he had outsmarted himself, and lost the one child that ever truly mattered.

He didn’t dare imagine how deep her despair had run.

Did it hurt? Did she cry alone?

She had always adored children. What must it have been like for her, to lose that baby alone?

And when he’d blamed her for not understanding motherhood, she already was a mother. She just couldn’t tell him.

His heart shattered into a thousand pieces.

He spun around and ran toward Emily’s room, only to find it empty.

The nurse glanced up, startled by the look on his face. “Ms. Hart has been transferred. A family member came to pick her up.”

Family? Emily had no family left.

Nathan pulled out his phone and dialed furiously.

It went straight to voicemail. Her texts came back with red exclamation marks, blocked.

He scrolled through his contacts, her coworkers, her friends. No one knew where she’d gone.

She was gone. She no longer believed in him.
