He Paid for the Wrong Heart Chapter 05

He Paid for the Wrong Heart Chapter 05

He was playing basketball with a few friends on the outdoor courts.

I happened to be walking past when the ball hit me squarely.

The person who threw it rushed over in a panic.

He glanced at the bruise forming on my forehead, then grabbed my arm. “Damn. I’ll take you to the hospital.”

I looked up, as the sunlight spilled down around us.

When the guy across from me saw my face clearly, he froze for a second.

Right then, I saw Hayes walking over from behind him.

His expression was dark as he called out, “Nolan.”

Only then did I realize who had hit me.

It was Nolan Voss.

The person who had given Hayes my contact by mistake.

Hayes’s gaze landed on Nolan’s hand around my arm. There was no smile on his face. “You’re just taking her to the hospital. Do you really need to grab her like that?”

At that, Nolan quickly let go.

In the end, they both took me to St. Catherine Medical Center.

Thankfully, it was nothing serious.

The entire time, Nolan kept bombarding me with questions, asking if it hurt, if I wanted water, or if I felt dizzy, while Hayes stood silently off to the side the whole time.

It wasn’t until we were leaving the hospital that Nolan pulled out his phone with studied casualness and said to me, “Want to add each other? Just in case you feel off later, you can call me.”

I paused.

Before I could answer, Hayes let out a cold laugh.

“She’s Talia Mercer,” he said. “The girl you accidentally made me date online. You already have her number.”

Nolan cursed under his breath. “Shit. That was you? I totally forgot I even had you on here.”

“You and Serena both had the same last name, so I completely mixed you two up. I thought her name was Talia.”

I pressed my lips together.

“Half a month ago, there was a campus event I was helping organize. We needed you to appear in it, so I contacted you online.”

But the event never ended up happening, so we never met in person.

Understanding finally dawned on Nolan, and his eyes curved with a smile.

“So that’s what happened.”

“Looks like we’ve got some real fate between us.”
