The One He Let Go Chapter 01

The One He Let Go Chapter 01

During the meeting, boss Caspian Drusus cleared his throat lightly.

Isabella Worthington and I both reached out and handed our cups over at the same time.

One cup was plain, lukewarm white water.

The other was an iced sparkling beverage.

Boss barely lifted an eyelid, and took Isabella’s drink.

The HR manager watched the ambiguous way their hands touched, and mulled it over for a long time.

It wasn’t until the meeting ended that he called me into his office:

“Boss and Isabella dated for eight years. You saw it too, there’s a good chance they’re getting back together.”

“Going to Savannah is a promotion, but it’s thousands of miles away.”

“We really can’t afford to offend the boss, so you’re the only one who can take this transfer.”

I swallowed the bitterness and said, “Okay.”

Then, I sent a message to the boss:

【Let’s get a divorce.】

I went back to my desk and slumped into my chair, exhausted.

The HR manager’s words echoed in my head:

“I never even saw Isabella’s resume before she was hired.”

“Then I searched on the university forum and found out they had a hot and heavy eight-year relationship.”

“Now she can waltz into the boss’s office anytime… Did you see that just now? The cup Isabella drank from, the boss took it and drank right after. How is that any different from an indirect kiss?”

Thinking about it,

I felt like there was a wad of thick cotton stuffed in my chest.

I couldn’t get it up, and I couldn’t get it down.

Just as I was staring at the transfer contract on my desk, hesitating, a colleague tapped on my cubicle and whispered,

“Mr. Drusus wants to see you in his office.”

I replied “Okay.”

I put the unsigned contract in my drawer.

And headed up to the top floor.

Just as I was about to knock, Caspian grabbed my wrist and pulled me into his arms.

The cool scent of cedar enveloped me.

He rested his chin on my forehead, his voice tender:

“Is the project under you giving you too much trouble?”

“I just transferred ten million to you. Why don’t you go out and unwind?”

Before I could answer,

Caspian casually decided for me:

“Haven’t you always wanted to see the Northern Lights in Iceland? This is the perfect chance to take a break.”

“As for the project you’ve been handling, just hand it over to Isabella. She—”

I shoved him away forcefully.

I looked Caspian straight in the eye.

He was dressed as usual, in a well-tailored dark suit, his shirt collar casually unbuttoned at the top.

He exuded an air of distant, laid-back restraint.

Seeing my expression still dark,

Caspian’s smile faded, and he tried to reason with me:

“The company gossip is bad for Isabella, saying she got in through connections.”

“If she can nail this project, it’ll help her get a foothold here.”

I laughed out of anger:

“You know damn well how hard this project is to land.”

“Don’t you know how long it’s been since I’ve had a full night’s sleep?”

“And now that it’s almost done, you want me to just hand it over to her?”

Right then,

The image of people badmouthing me in the break room after the meeting flashed in my mind—

“Man, she really doesn’t know her place. It’s laughable.”

“With Isabella around, does she really think the boss would take her drink?”

“Brown-nosing the boss like that, she should take a good look in the mirror.”

The resentment washed over me.

When I spoke again,

I couldn’t help but let a sob creep into my voice:

“Seriously, let’s get a divorce.”

“Even I think you and Isabella are the real couple now.”

Seeing my red-rimmed eyes,

Caspian, who was about to get impatient, suddenly froze.

Caspian looked down at me, “Mia, I—”

Before he could finish,

The door to the lounge swung open.

Isabella strutted out like she was on a catwalk, stretched, and said lazily:

“Caspian, not bad. You remembered I’m a light sleeper, got those blackout curtains and even prepared earplugs.”

“Good on you.”

Her eyes landed on me, she paused, and said apologetically:

“Did I interrupt you two?”

“I’m out of here.”

Isabella flashed me a sheepish grin, grabbed her bag, and headed out.

Just as she reached the door, she turned back as if she’d remembered something, and smiled at Caspian:

“Oh, by the way, Julian said he’s been stressed out and wants to get together for a drink to unwind.”

“It’s raining out. Can I catch a ride with you?”

Caspian didn’t answer.

He looked at me.

And said in a low voice:

“Julian, you know him. We’ve been tight since college.”

“It’s just a dinner.”

He took a deep breath and added softly:

“I’ll come home and explain everything tonight, alright?”

“If you’re tired, go to sleep. I’ll remind the housekeeper to warm some milk for you.”

I kept my eyes down.

Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Isabella’s haughty posture and the challenge in her gaze.
