At midnight, the disposal truck arrived.

We loaded them in as usual. Said goodbye.

Then, just as we finished, shots erupted inside the treatment center.

Julian and I ran.

Armed fighters had forced their way in. They’d received word that Hutu children were being sheltered here.

Julian went to negotiate. Calm. Cooperative.

I watched them kick in doors and tear through every corner.

I thought I might throw up.

They found nothing.

They threatened us. They were nearly gone.

Then someone outside shouted that he’d seen the disposal truck.

They poured out, cursing.

The last one paused in the doorway. Turned back. Threw a grenade into the center hall.

Everything slowed.

I watched the arc of it falling.

I saw the other doctors freeze.

I saw Julian’s face go savage as he ran toward me.

The moment before impact.

He covered me. Face down, his body over mine.

Both hands over my ears.
