“We’ve actually lost contact with him for a while now. There was a supply issue, and we tried to reach him to ask about substitutions, but he never responded.”

She looked up. Then her expression changed.

“Are you all right?”

I rubbed my eyes. Waved it off.

“I’m fine.”

She was kind about it. She handed me a packet of tissues and made me a cup of flower tea.

Then she went back to her work.

I sat there until I was calm again. Finally chose a small bunch of daisies and went to pay.

She stopped me.

“These are on us.”

I was confused.

She got a soft, remembering look.

“Mr. Julian mentioned, when he placed the order, that someone might come asking about it someday.”

“If she comes alone,” she said, “please give her flowers.”

“And tell her: keep walking. The starlight will light the way.”
