Jade’s eyes were brutal and satisfied.

“If I can’t have it, neither can you!”

Something washed over me like a wave.

I grabbed her by the head and drove it into the wall.

She shrieked.

The door burst open.

He took one look at Jade and came apart. He shoved me against the wall.

“Lena! What is wrong with you!”

Jade was trembling behind him, touching her forehead, barely standing.

“Brendan. I’m scared.”

I dropped to my knees.

I picked up the pieces with shaking hands. Glass cut my fingertips. I kept going.

Brendan grabbed my wrists.

“Stop. It’s done. You can’t put it back together.”

I shook apart. Tears falling without sound.

He gritted his teeth.

“It’s a camera. Just buy another one. Did you have to lose your mind over this?”

I bit the inside of my lip until I tasted blood.

Just a camera.

It was the only thing my mother ever left me. And he called it just a camera.

I looked up at him.

I slapped him across the face as hard as I could. My blood left a mark on his cheek.

“Get out.

“Get out of here.”

I pulled off my engagement ring.

Threw it in the trash.
