By the time I got to the restaurant, they’d already ordered.

Jade was sitting right next to Brendan.

No seat for me.

She looked me up and down when I walked in. Amused. Then waved me off.

“Grab a chair from somewhere. Just squeeze in wherever.”

I found the seat farthest from them.

Brendan watched the whole thing without saying a word.

Someone asked Jade: “We thought you weren’t coming back for this!”

“Are you kidding? This is Brendan’s wedding. I’d crawl back on my hands and knees just to get a look at whoever he found.”

Glances exchanged across the table.

“You two have always been something else.”

Then they asked about her travels. By the time the food arrived, she’d gotten through: catching yellowfin tuna in the Mediterranean, hiking the Camino de Santiago in Portugal, climbing Uluru in Australia.

Everyone’s eyes were shining.

“Jade, you’re a woman doing all of that! Aren’t you scared?”

“Please. I’m not one of those women whose whole world is groceries and kids and a husband.”

She tossed her hair.

“Bold people get to enjoy the world first.”
