My Husband Was Gone for Three Years, and Both My Mother-in-Law and I Got Pregnant Chapter 14

When Kevin saw Margaret, he smiled.

“Mom, help me talk some sense into Alison. Tell her to let Amelia and me petition for custody of

Lilly.”

“We don’t have children. We spend all day staring at each other with nothing to do, and the house feels empty.”

Kevin kept talking, completely unaware that Margaret had walked into the kitchen.

Bang!

Margaret grabbed a cast-iron skillet and slammed it against Kevin’s back.

The crash echoed through the house.

“You shameless bastard. You’ve come to steal my baby now?”

“Let’s see who dares lay a hand on my Lilly while I’m alive.”

“If you and that mistress have nothing to do, get a dog. If the house feels too quiet, turn on the

television.”

“Your boredom has nothing to do with us. Stay away from other people’s children.”

Kevin staggered, seeing stars.

When I pushed him out of the house, his eyes were still unfocused.

“Mom, you hit him too hard. What if you seriously injured him?” I asked as I closed the door and

tried to calm her.

“He deserved it. He abandoned us first.”

“I already have a son, a daughter, and a grandchild. Why would I care about losing him?”

Margaret scoffed.

Dylan later told me that Margaret had once given birth to a daughter when she was young.

Her ex-husband, who had wanted only sons, gave the baby away through an illegal private

arrangement.

Margaret searched for years but never found her.

No wonder she protected Lilly so fiercely.

For this daughter, she was willing to give up her biological son.

Dylan and I never got married.

He argued with me about it several times, but eventually realized that a marriage license wouldn’t

change our lives and stopped bringing it up.

I liked things the way they were.

Dylan handed over most of the income from his company, while Kevin paid court-ordered child support on time every month.

Two men supported our household.

We lived very comfortably.

Margaret devoted herself to raising the children and barely allowed me to touch the housework.

Whenever guilt struck, I waited until the house was quiet and hired a massage therapist to give her

an at-home spa treatment.

Every session left her glowing with happiness.

She already treated me like her own daughter.

“Alison, meeting you was the greatest blessing of my life,” Margaret said after one treatment.

“I worked my fingers to the bone when I was young. I never imagined I’d live this well in my old

age.”

Every time she finished a spa treatment, Margaret looked several years younger, her complexion

glowing.

As for me, aside from dropping off and picking up the children, I spent my days shopping or having

afternoon tea with friends.

Kevin’s money was enough for the children and me.

I had to treat myself well.

“What are you doing here?”

Dylan’s expression darkened whenever he saw Kevin in our home.

“I came for my scheduled visit with the children. Why does that concern you?”

Kevin still had no idea what his younger brother had been doing throughout those three years.
