The Unwanted Mrs. Whitmore Chapter 04

The Unwanted Mrs. Whitmore Chapter 04

Thinking back, it really had been hard for me not to fall for Callum at that age.

Evelyn brought me from Hollow Creek to Boston and sent me to the best prep school.

Her intentions were good.

But she had never considered that I couldn’t adapt to that world overnight.

Everyone in my class had been raised since birth with money and manners, raised to inherit family

fortunes.

When they saw me, none of them could hide their disgust.

Then Callum kicked the door open lazily and slung an arm around my shoulders.

“She saved my grandmother’s life, so she’s basically my sister. Anyone who messes with her

messes with me.”

At 15 or 16, he had a face as beautiful as a movie actor’s.

He appeared out of nowhere and saved me from that humiliation.

And in that 1 second, I felt my heart skip a beat.

Callum had been wild back then, but he wasn’t bad at heart.

When he heard me mispronounce French words, he would sneer while correcting me again and again.

When I did badly on an exam and cried in secret, he bought me doughnuts.

For more than 2 years in high school, we actually got along pretty well.

Things changed around graduation.

While we were waiting for college admissions results, Evelyn pulled me aside for a chat.

She asked whether I liked Callum and whether I would be willing to marry him.

I was carrying a quiet teenage crush, and I was more than a little embarrassed.

Evelyn saw right through me and pulled me into her arms.

She laughed loudly.

“Wonderful. I think having you 2 get married would be the best way to repay you.”

“You saved my life. I’ll make you part of the Whitmore family.”

There was a faint rustle in the flower bed nearby.

I didn’t hear it.

After a while, I finally swallowed my embarrassment.

“Evelyn, I like him. But he isn’t an object. You don’t need to repay a debt with marriage.”

“Please don’t say that again. It isn’t fair to Callum.”

“He’s so good. He deserves someone who fits his world. If he doesn’t want this, don’t trap him.”

At the time, I had no idea what everything would become later.

I never expected Callum to leave for another state the very next day and spend all 4 years of college

away.

Richard and Helena held that against me from then on.

After college graduation, Evelyn brought up our marriage.

Callum didn’t object.

But over 5 years of marriage, he gave me 5 years of coldness and contempt.

Now it was finally coming to an end.

I buried my head in Evelyn’s arms.

“Evelyn, please don’t blame me. I don’t want to disappoint your kindness.”

“That man… he’s very good to me. After so long, I want a life that truly belongs to me.”

She stroked my hair.

“Child, don’t say that. This was all my fault.”

“Once you’re settled later, I’ll come visit you.”

My eyes stung.

I quietly hummed in agreement.

After we confirmed the divorce, Evelyn said she would handle Richard and Helena.

I figured Callum had already made it clear yesterday that he wanted the divorce, so I didn’t tell him

about my conversation with Evelyn.

After leaving the room, I found Callum and Vivian sitting close together on the sofa.

When he saw me, he lifted his eyes and glanced at the person beside him.

In the end, he didn’t move.

Once I knew for sure I was getting divorced, my whole body felt lighter.

I said to Callum, “You must be hungry. I’ll go make something for your grandmother in the kitchen.

You can grab some too.”

Callum snorted coldly.

Vivian cut in.

“Lena, is this how you win over rich old ladies? No wonder Evelyn likes you, trying this hard to play

the good girl.”

I didn’t feel like fighting with her.

“Yes. If you look down on what I make, then stay out of the way.”

“Lena, be polite. Vivian is my guest.”

Callum spoke up to defend her.

His gaze fell on me, as if he were waiting for me to argue back or soften first.

I didn’t respond.

I turned and went into the kitchen.

We were getting divorced anyway.

I didn’t care.
