Clarence was too late.

I fell headfirst into the dark.

Behind me, I heard Clarence’s ragged scream as he threw himself toward the window.

By the time he threw open the window, I was already falling.

By the time he reached the backyard of the pack house, I was unconscious on the ground.

The sight of me sent a pain through him that he couldn’t ignore.

He whipped around to Bethany, who had followed him downstairs, and roared, “Call an ambulance!

Now!”

“If anything happens to Haley, I will never forgive you.”

Bethany fumbled for her phone with shaking hands.

Beneath her fear, there was something else surging–a vicious, poisonous resentment.

She had always believed I had stolen the good fortune that should have been hers.

I was born first, prettier, smarter, seemingly better at everything.

From the moment she started comparing us, she made it her mission to take back everything she believed I had stolen from her.

First, our parents’ love.

Then friends.

And when that still wasn’t enough, she set her sights on my mate.

She thought that would be enough to put herself above me, but I clawed my way out of the despair.

I had Clarence–an Alpha who once looked like he would give me everything.

Which was exactly why Bethany wanted to take him too.

She used their parents’ favoritism as a shield and methodically destroyed the second chance I had been given at life.

She thought she had finally won this time.

But watching Clarence now, frantic and panicked over me, holding me so tight it was like his entire

world was disappearing in his arms–Bethany had to face the truth. She had lost again.

Clarence was oblivious to what was running through Bethany’s mind.

He just held me tighter, words tumbling out of him in a desperate, incoherent rush.

“Haley, I’m sorry. I’m sorry, none of it was true. I just couldn’t stand that someone else loved you

before I did.”

As he said it, the good memories hit him like a flood.

He remembered falling for me at first sight. He remembered hovering at the edges of my life like a

thief while I was with Gabriel.

He remembered the day Gabriel and I became mates, how badly he wanted to carry me away from that ceremony right then and there.

But all he could do was chase the car that drove off that day, tears streaming down his face as he

watched me become another Alpha’s Luna.

That day had been a poisoned silver blade twisting in his chest.

He wanted me to be happy, but he could never bear for that happiness to come from another Alpha.

So he waited from a distance, watching my life from the shadows.

Until his chance finally came.

My mate cheated.

I fell into despair.

I was isolated, shattered, abandoned by nearly everyone who was supposed to love me.

And he pulled me from those ruins, rebuilt my world from the ground up.

Yet now he had destroyed it all with his own hands.

Seeing me with a head injury that might kill me, he lost all composure.

When the ambulance arrived, his face was white with terror.

But he still wouldn’t let go of me, holding on so tight that the healers had no choice but to drag him

onto the ambulance with me.

At the pack hospital.

He was forced to stop at the red line outside the surgical ward.

When the doors slowly closed in front of him, sealing me away inside.

The ever-proud Clarence dropped to his knees and prayed that I would survive.

Just then, the healing witch who had treated me before happened to walk by. She stopped dead when

she saw him.

“Alpha,” she asked, horrified, “what happened?”

When Clarence looked up at her, his eyes were shot through with red.

He shook his head, his voice wrecked. “Haley tried to kill herself.”

The healing witch froze for a moment, then shoved past him and burst into the operating room.

“How is she?” she demanded.
