A sharp ringing pierced my ears.

I shook my head in agony.

“No! Clarence, you can’t do this to me!”

Every corner of this pack house was something we had arranged together.

It was supposed to hold all my hopes for the future–not be occupied by another she-wolf.

Especially when that she-wolf was my own sister. The sister who had already betrayed me twice.

“What I do to you is my decision,” his voice held no warmth. “You forced me to do this, Haley. Remember that.”

He gave me a light push, then went downstairs to let Bethany in.

I had already cried myself to exhaustion, so that small push was enough to send me to the floor.

I tried to get up, but my body wouldn’t obey.

Clarence just leaned against the doorframe, watching me with a blank expression.

“See that, Haley?”

I looked up at him, and he let out a cold, mocking laugh.

“Without me, you can’t even stand. If you actually left me, where would you even go?”

Before I could answer, Bethany walked in.

“Long time no see, Haley,” she said, her smile radiant.

“Oh, almost forgot–congratulations on becoming Luna.”

Her provocation delighted Clarence.

He dipped his head and kissed the corner of her mouth with an almost indulgent tenderness.

“You’re absolutely irresistible,” he murmured.

I watched them flirt right in front of me, my entire body beginning to shake.

When Clarence noticed, something flickered in his eyes–something like regret–and he stepped toward me.

But the closer he got, the harder I trembled.

The moment his hand reached me, I doubled over and vomited.

His hand froze awkwardly in midair.

Then his voice came, low and dark.

“Haley, are you saying I disgust you?”

I didn’t have the strength to answer.

The pain I had suppressed for so long left me exhausted to my bones, too drained to even muster hatred.

But my reaction cut him deeper than I expected.

He seized my collar with both hands and hauled me up, laughing as he did.

“You brought this on yourself.”

“I was planning to end all of this after tonight. But now? Now I’m going to make you understand exactly how I felt back then.”

He released me abruptly, and I nearly collapsed again.

Then he beckoned to Bethany with a crook of his finger. “Tomorrow at the mating ceremony, you’ll be my Luna.”

Bethany’s eyes went wide with joy. “Then I want Haley as my bridesmaid.”

“Done,” he said, staring straight at me. “She can be your bridesmaid. She’ll carry our rings to the altar for us.”

Every word sliced into me like a blade.

I wanted to refuse.

I wanted to tell them they were shameless, disgusting, pathetic.

But when I opened my mouth, the tears came before any words could.

Clarence’s smile warped into something grotesque.

“Hurts, doesn’t it?”

“Good. That’s exactly how it felt three years ago, watching you become another Alpha’s mate.”

I looked at him, at that face twisted beyond recognition by hatred.

And suddenly I understood.

He had never wanted fairness.

He only wanted me to feel the pain he had suffered.

The more agony I showed, the more satisfied he became.

So I pressed my hand against the spot on my chest that had gone numb with pain and forced a casual smile onto my face.

“No, it doesn’t hurt at all. Clarence, you just make me sick.”

That finally broke him.

He shoved Bethany aside, grabbed me, and started dragging me toward the stairs.

I fought back with everything I had, but I was no match for the raw strength of an Alpha.

As we passed the master bedroom, he hesitated for half a second.

Then he kicked open the door to the room next to it and threw me inside.

The moment the door slammed shut, I rushed toward it. “Let me out–”

Too late.

From the other side, Clarence’s voice came through, cold and detached.

“You think I’m disgusting? Just wait. The night is still young.”

Then he said, “Bethany, come here.”

I stood frozen as a wave of cold swept through me from head to toe.
