More than a hundred salt-soaked strokes fell upon me, my skin split open everywhere, covered in raw, ugly injuries.

“Seren, this is nowhere near enough punishment!”

“And that mouth of yours—you loved cooing Rowan’s name so sweetly, didn’t you?”

Before she could say anything, the mercenary gripped my neck and forced my tongue out. His subordinate handed him metal pincers, and he pulled my tongue loose.

The crowd’s hearts seized at the sight. Soft-hearted women wept uncontrollably, tears streaming down their faces.

Rowan stared blankly, unaware blood trickled from the corner of his mouth from overwhelming distress.

I reached out to wipe it away, but my hand passed straight through his cheek.

A bitter, self-deprecating smile tugged at my lips. I’d forgotten I was nothing but a spirit now.

Yet the brutal scene pressed on.

Shudders wracked my body from the agony, and I blacked out repeatedly. Marnie ordered her men to inject me with morphine time and again, forcing me to stay conscious through every torment.

She leaned down to whisper in my ear. “Oh, the mercenary just told me you’re carrying a child—one month along. What a waste.”

At those words, all my struggling ceased.

I lifted my head blindly toward her voice, bowing my head over and over, whimpering wordlessly. I begged her to spare my baby, to let me live.

Marnie burst into wild laughter, tears streaming from her eyes as she cackled.

“Don’t rush to bow to me, Seren. I’ve sent men to deal with your father too. Rest assured, your three generations will depart together—you won’t be lonely.”

Sorrow and rage crashed over me, and blood-tears welled from my empty eye. I knew there was no way I would survive this night. My only regret was failing to protect my unborn child and my father.

“Even without eyes, you can still cry. How touching.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll bury you as close to Rowan as possible, so you can watch our loving happiness.”

She told the mercenary to cut into my abdomen and remove the baby.

Even after all that, her fury remained unquenched. She commanded the mercenary to cover my entire body with toxic curses. Then they sealed me inside a casket and buried me deep beneath the Fortitude Spire under cover of night.

The vision froze on my final weak whimper.

The red candle flickered out.

A deathly silence fell over the crowd.

Rowan’s chest heaved violently, his face drained ashen white from the blood he’d coughed up. His gaze locked unblinkingly onto Marnie.

Marnie stumbled backward two steps. “Rowan… none of this is real. It’s all evil sorcery from Elias…”

Rowan cut her off without mercy before she could finish speaking.

“You joined Seren and my firm three years ago. You never should have gotten the position at all. Do you know why we hired you anyway?”

Marnie parted her lips but said nothing.

“It was Seren. She said she felt an inexplicable warmth toward you, even wanted to take you in as her little sister.”

A mocking smirk twisted Marnie’s lips. “Be her sister? I want nothing of the sort!”

The small group that had defended her earlier fell completely silent. Every face bore complicated disgust.

“I can’t believe I spoke up for her earlier—disgraceful!”

“She has no gratitude in her bones, only unspeakable malice. How could she inflict such cruelty on the sister who showed her kindness? Has she any humanity left?”

Marnie realized her position was hopeless. Sweat beaded her forehead, yet she refused to surrender, desperate for one last chance to sway him.

Tears pooled in her eyes as she tried to rouse his old affection.

“Rowan, I admit I was jealous of Seren, but I truly never did any of these terrible things…”

Rowan roughly shook her hand off and kicked her hard to the ground.

“Vicious witch!”
