Beckett was silent for a moment. Then he tossed the bat to security. His voice was cold.

“Do as my wife says.”

Security took the bat. They didn’t hesitate. The metal came down on Jagger’s limbs. Tatum’s limbs. One after another. The screams didn’t stop.

I watched. No expression. Then my fingers touched my child’s headstone. Soft. Gentle.

“Baby. Mama and Papa got justice for you. If your anger is gone now, come back to us soon. Okay?”

Beckett’s large hand covered mine. “He will, Ave. The baby will come back.”

After that, Beckett moved us out of the Hamilton estate. He didn’t want me surrounded by memories that would cut me open. Whenever he had time, he took me traveling. Distractions. Fresh air.

We never spoke about the child. But we both knew. That wound would never fully close. A permanent scar.

Three years later. I was pregnant again.

The moment Beckett found out, he went on full alert. Dozens of bodyguards. Nannies. A fly couldn’t get near me.

After five months, he stopped going into the office. He stayed home. Every day. Every minute. Never left my side.

My belly grew. My feet swelled.

Every night, Beckett massaged them. He’d stare at my stomach. Sigh. Shake his head. He couldn’t sleep from the worry.

I reached up and smoothed the lines between his brows. Smiled. “Beckett. You’ve got a textbook case of prenatal anxiety. Want me to take you to the doctor tomorrow?”

Beckett laid his palm gently on my belly. “Ave. My heart won’t settle. Nothing can happen to this child. Nothing.”

I put my hand over his. “It won’t. This time, he’ll come to us safe and sound.”

Not long after, I gave birth. A healthy boy.

The grief that had hung over us—that weight we’d both carried—finally lifted. Gone.
