Noah’s expression went dark, like a sky before a storm. “Who?”
Marcus drew a shaky breath, his gaze flicking to me for a split second before landing back on Noah. He forced the words out.
“Two of your friends, Maya. They’re prepared to testify that you were… mentally unstable.”
Friends.
The word was a poisoned dart. My own accusation—that his love felt like a cage—still hung in the air, and now a fresh betrayal was closing in.
“Verify their backgrounds,” Noah said, his voice cold and steady, utterly devoid of panic. “I want every connection they have to the Whitaker family, financial or otherwise. Now.”
Marcus nodded like a soldier and hurried out of the room.
We were alone again. My earlier question—harbor or cage?—felt small and pointless. A more immediate threat was at the door.
Noah turned to me, the usual tenderness in his eyes replaced by a hard, unyielding resolve.
