He Said Don’t Wait, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 22

This wasn’t protection. This was… surveillance.
My pain, my tears, my private moments of despair—all of it had been calmly recorded, categorized, and archived by him, like evidence for a trial.
“Noah… you…” My throat felt tight. “You’ve been monitoring me?”
“Not monitoring, Maya. Documenting.” He turned to me, his eyes burning with an intensity I’d never seen before. “I knew they would come after you like this. I knew they’d try to paint you as unstable. I had to have proof that you were the victim, that you’ve been the victim for years. I had to…”
“This is creepy!” I blurted out, the fear in my voice sharp and raw. Behind the six years of professed love was a pair of eyes that had seen everything. This love didn’t feel like a safe harbor; it felt like an airtight cage built of data points and evidence. Was this love, or was it control?
“Maya, please,” he said, his voice laced with a pain that mirrored my own shock. “I only did this because I know how the Whitakers play. I had to build you a suit of armor—”
His words were cut off by a sharp knock. His assistant, a young man named Marcus, burst in without waiting for an answer, his face pale.
“Sir,” Marcus said, his voice strained. He glanced at me, then back at Noah. “They just filed their witness list with the court.”
Noah’s face hardened. “Who?”
Marcus took a deep breath.
“Two of Ms. Bennett’s friends. They’re prepared to testify that she was… mentally unstable.”
