He Said Don’t Wait, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 06

“Really.”
He leaned down and kissed my forehead, a touch that was gentle and reverent. “Good. Because you’re stuck with me now, Mrs. Caldwell.”
I laughed, a real, easy laugh that felt like it had been trapped inside me for years. “I can think of worse fates.”
When the song ended, I needed a moment, and a glass of champagne, to calm my racing heart. I slipped away from the dance floor and headed for the bar.
Just as my fingers closed around the cool stem of a flute, a voice I never wanted to hear again cut through the shadows.
“Maya.”
My entire body went rigid.
Garrett.
He was standing under a massive oak tree, looking like hell. His expensive suit was rumpled, his tie was crooked, and his eyes were shot with red. He didn’t look like the polished Charleston heir anymore. He looked like a man who had just lost everything.
My heart pounded, not with longing, but with pure, cold dread.
“Garrett. What are you doing here?” My voice was as level as if I were asking a stranger for the time.
“I had to see you.” He stumbled toward me, reeking of stale whiskey and desperation. “I had to… Maya, what the hell is this? You married Noah Caldwell? You married *him*?”
