He Said Don’t Wait, So I Married Someone Else Chapter 07

“Yes. I did.” I tightened my grip on the champagne flute.
“Why?” His voice cracked. “To punish me? To make a point?”
“To get on with my life,” I said coldly. “To marry someone who actually shows up.”
“That’s not fair—”
“Fair?” The laugh that escaped me was thin and sharp. “You want to talk about fair? Garrett, you left me at the marriage license bureau. On our wedding day. For Sloane. Again.”
“She broke her ankle! She needed me—”
“And my heart was breaking!” The words were a low, furious hiss. “Every time, Garrett. Every date, every anniversary, every single time I needed you, you chose her. Again, and again, and again.”
“I was just trying to help her…”
“No. You were trying to *save* her. You’re always saving her.” My voice suddenly went quiet, heavy with exhaustion. “Because you feel guilty about her parents, because you think you owe her something—I don’t know, and I don’t care anymore. But Garrett…” I looked at his shocked, uncomprehending face. “I needed saving, too. From a relationship where I was always the runner-up.”
