The Day the Don’s Heiress Lost Her Womb Chapter 05 Saving Myself

By the time Kane realized I might head for the airport, the plane had already left the runway.

I was flying to Eastbridge.

My flight records were locked behind layers of encryption. Not Kane, not any federal agency could trace

Kane went mad.

He emptied the Wood family’s entire underground network into the search. Airports, ports, train stations -every exit out of Ravenport was checked. Even illegal fishing boats were stopped and searched one by one. He pulled footage from every traffic camera in the city and watched it frame by frame until his eyes turned bloodshot.

Then he put out a 20 million reward for me.

One useful clue, and the money was theirs.

No one found me.

Not even a shadow.

He destroyed Wood Manor room by room. Living room, bedroom, halls, study-anything breakable was smashed. More than twenty men who failed him had their legs broken and were thrown out of Ravenport.

One veteran crew boss who had served him for over ten years finally muttered, “Madam may have already left the country.”

Kane shot him in the knee.

The man lost his leg on the spot.

After that, the whole family moved like they were walking on glass. No one dared say “Elena” near him. Even “woman” and “hospital” became forbidden words.

Then he cleaned out the manor.

Every servant and guard who had helped Vera hide the truth was dealt with.

The place that used to be loud and crowded turned dead overnight. Even birds seemed to avoid it.

Kane slept in my bedroom every night.

He held the pillow I used and smoked until the room stank. Cigarette butts covered the floor in ugly little piles.

His men said he had not slept properly in a month.

A little whiskey.

A few bites of bread.

That was all he took each day. He wasted down until he barely looked like himself.

By then, I was already settled in the apartment Professor Elias Thorne had arranged for me in Eastbridge.

When he read my medical report, he said nothing for half an hour.

He only smoked.

One cigarette after another.

At last, he crushed the last one out, stood, and patted my shoulder.

“Come with me.”

He took me to his private lab.

The room was filled with cutting-edge equipment.

He pointed at it and said, “Your project from three years ago. Cell-targeted therapy. I never gave it up. Now it may save you.”

“I’ve called in the best team I can get. Every resource here is yours. From this point on, whether you live depends on you.”

I nodded.

My eyes burned.

Three years ago, that project had earned me a PhD in biomedical engineering from Eastbridge Institute of Technology.

Without Kane, I would have stayed here.

I would have continued my research.

I might have become the youngest medical specialist in the world.

Now, I had to use my own work to pull myself back from death.

I reached the lab at seven every morning.

I left at midnight.

Rest became a luxury.

My body failed a little more each day. I fainted during experiments. I coughed until my chest felt split open. Sometimes there was blood in the phlegm. Sometimes the pain in my abdomen struck without warning, sharp enough to soak me in cold sweat.

I would bend over the lab bench, wait until I could breathe again, then keep going.

I could not stop.

The doctor had given me one month.

I had already stolen three extra days.

Each wasted day moved me closer to the end.

The people in the lab were kind.

No one asked where I had been or what had happened. When I collapsed, they carried me to the break room. They brought me hot food. They stayed late to fix the data with me.

Professor Thorne came every day with medicine.

He watched me eat.

He made sure I slept.

Like a father.

The days were quiet and steady.

For the first time in three years, my life belonged to me.
