Married At 9AM, Divorced At 10AM Chapter 12

His fingers unconsciously tightened around the phone.

“Dad, who did the West family’s son marry?”

“How would I know? The point is they’re married. We can’t be cheap with the gift. You get back here quickly. Don’t make it seem like we’re too high and mighty.”

“…Got it.”

Sophia had just fastened her seatbelt when her phone lit up. She looked down and suddenly laughed.

“Hey, that HappyGoLucky got back to me.”

“She said not to bother. She lost the baby and she’s in the hospital.”

Sophia scrolled through the screen, her voice tinged with gossipy sympathy. “She also said the wedding is still happening in Portsville and I’m welcome to come… pretty tough, losing a baby and still going through with a wedding?”

Jake’s hand stilled on the steering wheel. “Where did you say?”

“Portsville.” Sophia held out her phone. “See for yourself. She told me a lot.”

He took it. The screen showed their chat on the marketplace app.

He scrolled up through older messages.

[HappyGoLucky: How old is your baby? I just found out I’m having twins. I’m so happy I could faint, lol.]

[HappyGoLucky: My husband booked an appointment to get our license on Valentine’s Day. He waited in line forever. He doesn’t have money, but he’s all about the romance.]

[HappyGoLucky: After the kids are born, our family of four… just thinking about it feels like a dream.]

He scrolled through them, one by one.

The tone was so familiar it gave him an uneasy feeling. For a moment, he almost thought he knew the person on the other end.

He handed the phone back without saying anything.

The car merged onto the main road.

Streetlights raced past the window, one after another.

He remembered Emma talking about her family a long time ago.

That day, they were lying on the floor of their apartment.

She said, “Actually, I have a twin brother.”

“His name is Andrew. Andrew and Emma. Cute, right?”

“My parents had huge hopes for him. For me… they just let me be. They thought a girl should just be happy.”

Then her brother had an accident and drowned.

Their gold business was also viciously targeted by competitors and collapsed almost overnight.

Her parents seemed to age ten years in a single day. They started forcing her to learn all kinds of skills.

She couldn’t handle the suffocating pressure, so she ran away to Fairhaven alone.

She worked, saved money, and lived her own life.

Eventually, her parents came around.

Her mother called and said, “Emma, I’ve changed my mind. When you get married, if your husband is willing to learn, your father and I are willing to teach him everything.”

Emma had laughed when she told him this. “So you better be good to me. You’re going to inherit my family’s secret technique.”

He had laughed at her back then. “With your family’s financial situation? Secret technique?”

She had looked at him seriously. “It’s true. My parents said whoever marries me is basically getting a gold mine.”

He hadn’t believed her.

He had never believed anything she said about “money”, because she was so frugal.

So frugal that he forgot she used to have savings, that she never had to live like this in the first place.

The car stopped at a red light.

He let out a quiet laugh, his voice low. “That idiot…”

“With me, she’d be lucky to have food on the table. And she wanted me to learn some family craft.”
