He Changed My Major And I Changed My Entire Life Chapter 07

Sean froze, stunned. He clearly hadn’t expected me to turn down his attempt at making up. Or to hear me say all those things cutting him off.

He started to panic. His eyes reddened, and he grabbed my hand, not letting go. “No, please… I’ve been dying to apologize, I just never got the chance.”

“I caught a bunch of butterflies and made specimens to give you as a peace offering. But you’d already left. That’s why I came all the way here.”

“Joanie, I don’t want us to go our separate ways. Please don’t shut me out.”

I stared at him, caught off guard. This was the first time I could remember him saying this much to me. His words came out stumbling, choked, desperate.

“And Katherine—I’ll make her apologize to you. I’ll cut her off completely. No more hanging out. Will that work?” He looked up at me nervously, almost pleading.

[Omg those puppy dog eyes. Say yes already!]

[Can we just fast forward to them making up already lol.]

The comments kept scrolling.

I felt a little dazed myself. To be honest, Sean making any kind of change was already a big deal for him. For the first time, he was actually putting his feelings out there in the open.

The old Joanie would’ve cried and jumped into his arms. But I didn’t feel happy about it. Just tired and kind of sad.

If Sean had realized how far apart we’d grown even a little earlier, if he’d tried instead of leaving me carrying our entire relationship single-handedly, we wouldn’t have ended up here.

The clock tower bell rang out across campus. I glanced back, then turned away, my mind clear and steady.

“I don’t care anymore.”

“Go home. Even if you end up with Katherine, I’ll be happy for you.”

I came here to study. I had my own path to follow. Twelve years of his hot-and-cold moods, twelve years of swallowing my own feelings—I was done. I didn’t want to let old pain hold me back anymore.

I turned, pulled my hand away, and walked through the university gate without looking back.

[Don’t go! Don’t be so cold!]

[He’s standing there like a total lovesick pining mess. Just look back once. You can’t feel nothing.]

[Honestly this is hard to watch. Joanie’s being selfish. She doesn’t appreciate everything he did for her.]

[She’s being ridiculous. His coldness is just a defense mechanism. Why can’t she see past it to how he really feels?]

[Bring on a new love interest.]

I stopped walking. I slowly lifted my head, read those last few lines,

and smiled bitterly.

“Go ahead. That’s exactly what I want.”

“I’m not selfish. He’s the one who doesn’t deserve my love. Only people brave enough to be honest earn real love in return.”

“I chased after him for twelve years. I gave in again and again. And what did I get? Him deciding behind my back that my dreams didn’t matter. Just because he lowers his head now, I’m supposed to forgive him?”

“Do you really think I’m that pathetic?”

Years of bottled-up grievance and hurt spilled out all at once. I was shaking, but a huge weight lifted off my chest.

The comments exploded with question marks.

[Wait, what’s happening? Is the feed broken? How can she see us?]

[Okay but… she’s not wrong though? His love is controlling and invisible.]

[Anyone who changed my major would be dead to me. If her family wasn’t wealthy, she’d be stuck reapplying right now.]

[So many weird comments earlier. I was scared to say anything. Hope everyone who defended him gets a boyfriend just like that.]

[He literally said she had no talent for research. Being awkward isn’t an excuse to hurt someone. Team Joanie all the way.]

[Biology is amazing. Insects are cool. Let her shine on her own!]

I locked eyes on that last comment and finally laughed. All the heaviness in my chest lifted.

“Thank you.”

I had my dreams, a family who supported me, and my whole future ahead of me. I didn’t need a male lead to complete my story—I was the only main character I needed.
