Dusk fell at the Blair family home. Mrs. Blair greeted us with a warm smile as we stepped inside. She rarely cooked from scratch herself, but tonight she had an apron on. She turned and smiled gently at me.

“Jo, glad you’re here. Have a seat. That boy of mine still isn’t home. Could you give him a call? You’re the only one he ever listens to.”

I met her hopeful gaze and hesitated for a moment before dialing Sean’s number. The phone rang through three full cycles before he finally picked up. It was loud on his end. His voice sounded lazy and arrogant.

“Oh? Finally coming to eat humble pie and own up to your mistake?”

I frowned, not wanting to waste words. “Mrs. Blair threw a small victory dinner to celebrate our college acceptances. When are you coming home?”

He went quiet for a second. He mistook my initiative for surrender. His voice stayed cold but softened just a little.

“I’ll head home if you pick me up.”

A lump formed in my throat. Anger bubbled up, but I swallowed it when I looked back at the warm scene inside. My mom and Mrs. Blair were chatting happily. They finally had a chance to relax. I didn’t want to ruin it. I told myself this would be the last time I cut Sean one final slack before walking away.

I calmed down, changed my shoes quickly, hurried downstairs, and ordered a ride-share. But when I got to the location he sent, I found myself outside a bar. Neon lights flashed everywhere. The air smelled sharp with alcohol.

My knuckles turned white as I gritted my teeth and walked through the swirling lights until I found Sean’s booth.

“Come home. Now.”

Everyone at the table turned to look at me. Sean parted his lips to speak, but Katherine clapped a hand over her mouth and doubled over laughing, pointing at me.

“Told you I’d win the bet!”

“Wow, look at your dynamic. The good girl came all the way to a bar like a lapdog. You lost. Drink up.”

Katherine draped herself over Sean, who hadn’t said a word, and pressed a drink to his lips. The other guys at the table burst out laughing.

“Honestly, dating someone like Kat is way less of a hassle.”

“Who knew Blair’d end up with someone so whipped for him?”

I stood frozen, face burning. I never thought my giving in would turn into a dumb dare-game bet. I stared hard at Sean. He stayed quiet for a long time, then casually drank the liquor Katherine fed him and said flatly,

“Enough. They’re joking. Don’t take it seriously.”

He didn’t defend me at all. Just brushed it off with one sentence like nothing happened. Even after I’d told myself to stop loving him, twelve years of bond and affection made his coldness sliced my heart to ribbons. It hurt to even breathe.

The comments popped up again.

[My heart. He’s just stubborn. Lowkey happy she showed up though.]

[Ugh just swallow your pride already. If she threw him a bone they’d be fine.]

[Tbh I get why he’s mad. Dude talked to so many advisors before picking that major for her. She has no clue how much work he put in. I’d be pissed too.]

Wave after wave of comments pressed down on me. I couldn’t breathe. It felt so bitter. Everyone took Sean’s side. Everyone cared about how he felt. But no one asked if I was okay or if any of this hurt.

I dug my nails into my palms, steadied my breathing, lifted my chin, and looked him straight in the eye.

“Fine. I’ll let it go.”

“But Sean, this is the last time I put up with your stupid games.”

Sean’s brows furrowed. “Huh? What’re you getting at?”

“What else?” Katherine giggled and tapped the back of his hand. “Our little princess is all bent out of shape. Hurry home or she’ll burst into tears, y’hear?”

Sean’s gaze darkened, but my eyes caught on the wooden box in Katherine’s hand. My face went pale. I nearly screamed.

“Who said you could take my stuff?!”
