Charles barked at me.

Donovan and Kelsey just stared at each other for a long moment. Then Kelsey awkwardly tried to smooth things over. “Oh, you two just had a little fight, didn’t you?

“It’s okay. Your father and I will leave. You two talk it out.

“You’re married now. There’s nothing you can’t get past.”

Kelsey grabbed Donovan’s arm and was about to leave.

I stopped them.

“Lord Barnes, Lady Barnes, I’m not just saying this out of spite or talking nonsense.

“Last night, Chancellor Wallace and Lady Wallace were having dinner at our place. I was there with them the whole time.

“If you don’t believe me, you can go ask the Chancellor yourself.”

Now, Donovan and Kelsey were completely lost.

Kelsey muttered to herself, “That can’t be right. The maid said the newlyweds were not quiet last night.

“If it wasn’t you, then who was Charles with-”

I raised an eyebrow at Charles.

“Come on, Lord Barnes. Time to fess up.

“If we actually have to bring the Chancellor Wallace here, it’s only going to make worse.”

Charles shot me a dirty look.

But under Donovan and Kelsey’s sharp stares, Charles had no choice but to back down.

Charles turned and went back inside. When he came out again, a woman was with him.

Donovan frowned at how tightly Charles was holding her hand. “Who is she?”

Charles’s eyes darted around. He stammered, “She, she’s Lilith Geller. She’s from the, uh, the Shaw family-”

He was taking forever to spit it out. I couldn’t help myself anymore. “Lilith here is my mother’s sworn younger sister.

“She’s been registered under my grandmother’s name. So now she’s my grandmother’s adopted daughter.”

Kelsey looked confused. “Heather, I see your mom pretty often. I never heard anything about her gaining a sworn sister.

“And this girl doesn’t look that old. She’s just the right age to be your sister. Why would your mom take her as a sworn sister?”

I gave an awkward smile. “Because calling her my sister wouldn’t be appropriate, given who she really is.”

Kelsey still didn’t get it.

But Donovan’s face was getting darker by the second.

After a long pause, Donovan looked up at Lilith and said, “Back when Edwin was alive, I heard him mention your name once when he was drunk.

“Tell me the truth. Who are you really?

“What’s your relationship with Edwin?”

Lilith’s face went red, then white. She couldn’t bring herself to say it.

Seeing that, I pretended to help her out.

“Lord Barnes, my dad and my stepmom are old news now.

“Let’s not dig all that up.

“Charles is in love with her. His study is full of her paintings. You could say true love finally found its way…”

“Heather, shut your mouth.”

Charles knew I was just stirring the pot. His face turned bright red with rage.

But before he could say anything else, Donovan barked at him. “Charles, you’re the one who needs to shut up.”

“Someone search Charles’s study and bedroom right now. Bring me every single painting.

“I want to see if Heather’s telling the truth.”

Kelsey collapsed onto the floor with a thud. “Step… stepmom?

“Heather, this woman Lilith-she’s your dad’s second wife who never showed her face anywhere?”

I quickly waved my hand. “Lady Barnes, don’t worry too much. My mom and the Shaw family elders already kicked Lilith out.

“She’s not my stepmom anymore. She’s just my mom’s sworn younger sister now. She’s free to marry whoever she wants.”

That was the thing I’d asked Mom to take care of.

But hearing that only made Kelsey cry even harder.

Right then, the servants carried in several chests full of paintings.

Looking at all those faceless portraits, Charles finally found something to argue with.

“Mom, Dad, don’t listen to Heather talking nonsense.

“She’s the one who changed her mind. She didn’t want to marry me, so she set me up. Every single one of these paintings is of her.”

Donovan and Kelsey stared at the faceless paintings, unable to tell which of us was telling the truth.

While they were stuck, another servant came in holding a scroll.

“Lord Barnes, I accidentally discovered a hidden compartment in the young lord’s study. There was this painting inside, so I brought it.”

Donovan unrolled it, took one look, and immediately rolled it back up.

Then his face turned bright red as he looked at Charles, furious. “So how do you explain this one?”
