Reborn Three Times: His Murdered Wives Uncovered His Obsession Chapter 05 You’ve Got It Wrong

The next morning, Jasmine and I went out to buy some new jewelry for our upcoming weddings.

Halfway there, I got tired and sat down at a small café to wait for Jasmine.

Then out of nowhere, two scary-looking guys showed up. Without saying a word, they clamped a hand over my mouth and dragged me off.

I fought back as hard as I could, but they got sick of me struggling and just knocked me out.

When I opened my eyes again, I was at Barnes House.

Charles was sitting alone on the wedding bed, staring at me like he wanted to kill me. His voice was cold as ice.

“Heather, start explaining.”

I’d braced myself for something like this, but the way he looked at me still made my skin crawl.

I forced myself to stay calm. “Explain what?

“You sent a marriage proposal, Lord Barnes. You didn’t say who it was for. So what difference does it make who ended up marrying you?”

The words had barely left my mouth when Charles crossed the room in three big steps and pinned me against the door.

His eyes were red and swollen. He looked like he wanted to eat me alive.

“Heather, no matter how much you’re doing this out of spite, you don’t mess around with something like marriage.

“Switching the bride on me like that on our wedding day-do you think that’s funny?”

I sniffed the air and caught the lingering scent of intimacy.

I pointed at the messy bed and sneered. “Judging by how things look, Lord Barnes, it seems like you enjoyed yourself just fine.”

“You-!”

Charles looked a little guilty. His words got stuck in his throat, and for a moment, he had nothing to say.

After a long pause, he finally found a plausible excuse.

“The candles burned out last night. It was pitch black in here. How was I supposed to know the bride had been switched?”

I laughed, disgusted, and shot down his excuse right away.

“This whole room smells like roses. I’m guessing that’s the new bride’s perfume, right?

“Lord Barnes, you’ve known me for years. Don’t you know I never wear that kind of perfume?

“If you ask me, you didn’t just ‘not know’ the bride had been swapped.

“You actually liked this new one. Isn’t that right?”

Charles froze.

He didn’t even have to say anything. The guilt in his eyes said it all.

I shook my head scornfully and pushed him away.

“Since you’re happy with her, stop bothering me.

“Just go live a good life with your new bride.”

I hurried out the door, wanting to get out of that sickening place as fast as I could.

But Charles pulled me right back in.

His voice was hard and commanding.

“You’re staying.

“In a little while, you’re coming with me to formally greet my parents. We’ll pretend you’re the one who married me yesterday.”

I was stunned for a second, then got so angry I laughed.

“That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard. How could you even think of something like that?

“Never mind whether I agree to it-what about the woman you spent the night with? If you go through with this, how can you do right by her?”

A flicker of pain flashed in Charles’s eyes. His voice was full of reluctance.

“I know. I let her down.

“But if people find out I married her, Barnes House will never live it down.

“Heather, you still need to be the real wife.

“As for her, I’ll make it up to her some other way.”

I’d always thought Charles was crazy about that woman in his heart.

But after hearing him say that, I finally understood—the only person he truly loved was himself.

I was about to say no when Donovan and his wife, Kelsey Barnes, walked into the courtyard.

Kelsey took my hand gently. “Heather, you must be exhausted from last night.

“I figured you wouldn’t be able to get up and greet us this morning, so I came to check on you myself.”

She reached up and fixed my hair, which Charles had messed up. Looking at me like a daughter, she said, “It’s so good. Donovan and I have waited way too long for this.

“You’re finally my daughter-in-law.”

I pulled my wrist out of Kelsey’s hand, took two steps back, and put some distance between us.

I gave a polite but distant curtsy. “Lord Barnes, Lady Barnes, you’ve got it wrong.

“Your daughter-in-law isn’t me-”
