On the way, Marco told me this was the first time in his twenty-five years he had ever been to Dante’s home.

When he was first adopted into the Romano family, nearly everyone had opposed it.

They were all afraid he would one day try to claim a piece of the family fortune, status, and inheritance.

But the old man had insisted on the adoption, and no one could stop him.

All these years, Marco had lived abroad with the old man.

When they saw each other during the holidays, their greetings were always brief and polite.

So now, Mr. and Mrs. Romano naturally didn’t want him to see their son in his most humiliating state.

But they were afraid I would refuse to help, so they swallowed their objections.

When the car stopped at the gates of the Romano estate, the first people I saw were my parents.

They were waiting outside.

Both of them looked terrible. Their hair was a mess, their clothes hopelessly wrinkled. They were a far cry from the polished couple at the wedding yesterday.

Mr. Romano personally opened the car door for me.

The moment my parents saw that, their eyes lit up, and they rushed toward me.

“My good daughter, you’re finally here. Please, put in a good word for us. We had no idea things would turn out like this.”

I looked at them, my voice cold.

“Mr. Bennett, Mrs. Bennett, I seem to recall you publicly stating yesterday that I was no longer your concern.”

“You only have one daughter. Her name is Isabel.”

The moment Mom heard that name, she shrieked.

“Don’t mention that useless girl! She couldn’t save Mr. Romano, and now she’s dragged us into this mess. We don’t have a daughter like her.”

Dad quickly forced a smile.

“That’s right, you’re our only daughter now. From now on, we’re done with her.”
