Gavin realized Hailey was angry and let out a deep sigh.

He pulled Hailey into his arms.

“Come on. Don’t say things you don’t mean.”

“You know you’re the one I love most.”

“Wendy is only doing this to make me angry. Once she cools off in a couple of days, she’ll come back. When that happens, I’ll swallow my pride, apologize, and soften her up.”

“She’ll definitely come running back with even better projects for me.”

After landing in Vancouver, I spent two days resting.

Then I quickly threw myself into getting familiar with the branch office.

Carter Shaw came with me. He was the only son of Mr. Shaw Sr. of the Shaw Group.

My dad said that when Mr. Shaw Sr. heard he was sending me out to gain experience, he immediately decided to throw Carter out here for training too.

I just did not understand why the Shaw family, with its countless business lines, would send him to train at my family’s company.

My relationship with Carter was a little hard to explain.

He had been business-minded since childhood, and my dad often praised him in front of me.

As a spoiled heiress my father had doted on since I was little, I could not stand hearing my dad praise someone else.

So Carter and I had been locked in vicious competition since we were young.

If he ranked first in class, I immediately had to rank first in the whole school.

When he started trying to launch a business the summer after high school graduation, I flew back from Bora Bora and threw myself into the company the very next day.

When he double-majored in economics and computer science, I insisted on getting a master’s degree.

But after I started dating Gavin in college, I rarely paid attention to Carter anymore.

After entering the branch office, the two of us were not assigned to the same team.

For the umpteenth time, we ended up arguing in a conference room because our opinions and proposals clashed.

Calling it an argument was not quite accurate. It was more like me tearing into him while he barely fought back.

“Carter, did you buy those dual degrees of yours?”

“How did you manage to turn such a simple issue into such a terrible proposal?”

Carter did not get angry. He only smiled gently.

“Wendy, you’re actually very impressive.”

“Your taste in men is just terrible.”

I froze, trying to come up with a comeback.

But I realized I had nothing to say.

He was right. My taste had been terrible enough for me to fall for Gavin.

Not only had it wasted my youth and all the passion I once had, it had almost cost my father his life.

The thought made my chest feel blocked and heavy.

Acid surged in my stomach again, twisting into pain.

Carter said nothing and walked out.

A short while later, he came back with a glass of warm water.

He placed stomach medicine in my hand.

“You have stomach problems too?”

Carter laughed in exasperation and patted my back as he said, “I prepared it for you.”

The warm water went down and seemed to warm me all the way to my heart.

I picked up the branch office work quickly, and everything went more smoothly than I had expected.

Once I got busy, I slowly thought of Gavin and Hailey less and less.

The pain in my heart faded a little too.

Gavin, however, was not doing nearly as well.

After I had promised him the projects, he had spent a large sum of money in advance to purchase materials.

Now that he had lost the projects, more than a dozen warehouses’ worth of materials were piled up with nowhere to go.

Gavin spent every day overwhelmed and anxious.

His phone kept lighting up with transaction alerts. Irritated, Gavin tapped them open.

They were all large purchases made by Hailey.

He rubbed his temples and called her.

“Hailey, the company’s cash flow is a little tight lately. Buy fewer luxury items for now.”

The moment he finished speaking, Hailey’s furious voice came through.

“Do you think all of it is for me? I’m preparing things for the baby.”

“If it’s for the baby, shouldn’t I buy the very best?”

“You keep saying you cherish us more than anything, but if you can’t even afford this, then why have a child at all? I’ll just go get an abortion tomorrow.”

Gavin suppressed his emotions and apologized again and again.

He knew Hailey’s temper. If she acted on impulse, she might really get an abortion.

After the call ended, Gavin stood blankly in front of the floor-to-ceiling window.

He thought of me.

Back when his company had just started, it had been at its most difficult stage.

I had stood by him through it all and begged my father to help him many times.

When my father refused to invest, I sold every luxury item I owned and gave Gavin his first startup capital.

Gavin felt hollow inside.

A month had already passed.

I still had not reached out to him.

He picked up the office landline on his desk and dialed my number.

“Hello?”
