The Lawyer’s Lie Chapter 21

The Lawyer’s Lie Chapter 21

When Clara woke, she found herself inside a car, with buildings rushing past outside the window.

She sat up abruptly and saw Julian in the driver’s seat.

“You’re awake?” His voice was calm. “We’ll be at the airport in ten minutes.”

Clara’s heart pounded wildly, but she forced herself to stay calm.

“Julian, are you insane?”

He gave a faint smile. To her, it looked more painful than if he had cried.

“I am insane. I went insane the moment I lost you.”

Clara took a deep breath. “You’re a lawyer. You should know this is illegal.”

“I know.” He looked at the road ahead. “I know everything. I just can’t stop myself.”

Clara clenched her fists. “I’m not going with you.”

Julian said nothing.

Then, outside the window, a black car suddenly shot out and cut across their path.

Julian slammed on the brakes.

The car door opened, and Asher stepped out, his expression terrifyingly grim.

“Let her go.”

Julian looked at him and suddenly laughed.

“Your own company is imploding, and you still have time to show up here?”

Asher ignored him and only stared at Clara.

The moment Clara saw him, her eyes suddenly burned.

“Enough talking,” Asher said, his voice cold as ice. “I told you to let her go.”

Julian stepped in front of Clara, his smile twisting. “Dream on. You wife-stealing bastard-”

He did not finish.

A gunshot cracked through the air.

A bullet struck Julian in the shoulder, and he staggered backward, crashing against the car door.

Clara froze.

But the next second, she still broke free from Julian’s hand and ran toward Asher.

Julian leaned against the car door, watching her back.

She was running toward another man without looking back.

She threw herself into that man’s arms and was held tightly by him.

Julian clutched his bleeding shoulder and collapsed to the ground.

He watched the two of them. He watched that man lower his head and kiss the top of her hair. He watched

her lift her face and smile at him.

Those images gouged into his heart like knives.

The world before his eyes grew darker and darker.

The last thing he saw was Asher guiding her into that black car with an arm around her.

Julian lay on the ground. It seemed as if a fine drizzle had begun to fall from the sky, landing on his wound.

It hurt so much.

Gradually, beyond the pain, he began to feel cold.

It was so cold, so terribly cold that even his blood seemed to have turned to ice.

Was it a late-season cold snap?

Clara hated late-season cold snaps more than anything.

He remembered how, last year, Clara had hugged him and, in a rare moment of coquettishness, complained, “Stupid cold front. If you’ve already left, why come back? People should know how to leave gracefully, and

cold fronts should too!”

“You shouldn’t turn back. Once you leave, you leave!”

And so Julian’s final thought before losing consciousness was this:

He really had lost her.

When she left, she was never coming back.
