The Lawyer’s Lie Chapter 19

The Lawyer’s Lie Chapter 19

Clara had not expected Julian to lose control like this.

She had thought things between them were already over.

After everything he had done to her, after that final slap she had given him, and after the final divorce decree,

there should have been nothing left between them.

She had thought he would be as calm and rational as he had always been, someone who could accept a loss

and move on.

After all, he was the famously upright and self-possessed Mr. Grant.

But he was not.

After that day, Julian seemed like a different person.

He found the apartment where she was staying and waited downstairs every day.

When she left for filming, he followed her to the set.

When she wrapped and went home, he trailed behind her from dozens of feet away, saying nothing, only

watching her.

He had never liked flashy, sentimental gestures before. He had not even given her flowers when he proposed.

But now, he began sending flowers. One bouquet every day.

He had always valued time above everything else, to the point where even their dates had to be scheduled in

advance.

But now, he stood outside the film set for entire days at a time.

The problem was, all of it came far too late. Clara only found it annoying.

When she looked at those flowers, she felt sick. When he followed her, she felt harassed.

She was already engaged, and Asher had helped her so much. She did not want him to misunderstand.

That night, she finally could not hold it in anymore and told Asher the truth.

“He keeps cornering me,” she said with a frown. “I already made things clear to him, but he won’t listen.”

Asher leaned back against the couch and listened until she finished. Then he smiled.

“I know.”

Clara froze. “You know?”

“My people told me a long time ago.” He tilted his head and looked at her. “I thought you were allowing it.”

“I wasn’t allowing it!” Clara said, suddenly anxious. “I agreed to marry you. I’m not going to get entangled with

him again.”

Asher’s mouth turned down slightly, like a child who had been wronged.

“But when we were kids, you also said you would only play with me. Later, you still had so many friends

around you.”

Clara did not know whether to laugh or be exasperated at his tone.

“How is that the same thing?”

As soon as she said it, a few memories surfaced.

Many years ago, they had lived in the same housing project.

Back then, Asher had not yet been recognized by the Blackwood family. He was skinny as a rail and was

always being bullied by the other kids.

She first noticed him because the bullying was so bad that she could not stop herself from helping him once.

After that, Asher started following her everywhere.

That lasted until a talent scout discovered her and she left that place.

Later, after she became famous, she asked someone to look for him, only to find that he was no longer

there.

Much later, she saw him again at a party.

He wore an expensive suit and stood at the center of the crowd, surrounded by people trying to curry favor

with him.

When he saw her, he walked over.

“Clara,” he said. “Long time no see.”

She stared at him for a long time before she finally recognized him.

The scrawny, sallow-faced kid from back then was now more than a head taller than she was.

His features had matured, carrying a boldness and innate disdain that were impossible to ignore.

But when he looked at her, the light in his eyes was exactly the same as when they were children.

Only later did she learn that he had been recognized by the Blackwood family, then clawed his way over the wreckage of the other illegitimate children to reach where he was now and take control of the family.

At that party, he asked her, “Do you remember what I told you?”

She asked what he meant.

He said, “When I grow up, I’m going to marry you and take you home.”

She froze.

He said, “Divorce him. Marry me. I’ll give you anything you want.”

She thought he was joking.

Only later did she realize he had been serious.

From that day on, he pulled strings for her in the industry and helped her land new opportunities.

That was why, when something happened to Noah, the first person she thought of asking for help was him.

She had agreed to marry him because he had helped her too much, and she did not know how else to repay

him.

But now, looking at the man in front of her and hearing him talk about their childhood, something in her

heart softened.

Almost without thinking, she lifted her hand and ruffled his hair the way she had when they were children.

Asher froze for a second, and the tips of his ears turned red.

When Clara saw that hint of red, she suddenly felt a little embarrassed too.

But he immediately caught the hand she was about to pull back and said hoarsely, “I found you a new movie

project. Your audition is tomorrow. I’ll go with you.”

“As for Julian, I won’t let him show up in front of you again.”
