The Lawyer’s Lie Chapter 06

The Lawyer’s Lie Chapter 06

“Move.” Clara tried to break free. “I need to file a police report. Something may have happened to Mia.”

“You knew I would come here to file a report, so you rushed over to stop me.” Julian gave a humorless laugh. “You’ve gotten very good at abducting people now, haven’t you? Clara Bennett, didn’t I tell you never to do this

again?”

Clara went rigid, her heart clenching as if someone had wrapped a fist around it.

Back then, when that judge had tried to destroy Julian, she had had the judge kidnapped as a warning. It was

the craziest thing she had ever done for love.

Julian had said he would remember it forever. Now it had become evidence for him to accuse her.

“I didn’t touch Wendy.” Her voice trembled. “I don’t know where she is, either. You can file your report if you

want, but I need to file one for Mia-”

“I haven’t reported anything yet. Hand Wendy over, and I won’t pursue this.”

Julian cut her off and tightened his grip on her wrist, as if he were using the last of his patience.

“She has severe PTSD. Do you have any idea how badly she can spiral when she’s left alone?”

“I know you hate her because of what happened to your face, but she was only having an episode then. Noah

triggered her…”

Clara could not break free. Suddenly, she felt unbearably sad.

“Enough. You don’t have to remind me. I’ll tell you one thing. I was at the hospital the whole time, and then

you dragged me to that dinner. How could I have kidnapped her?”

Julian froze for a moment, doubt flickering through his eyes. Then his phone suddenly rang.

He answered immediately, and his assistant’s voice came through loudly from the other end.

“Mr. Grant, we found Clara’s wedding ring on Ms. Wells’s hospital bed.”

Julian looked at Clara’s hand. The wedding ring she had never taken off was indeed gone.

The last trace of patience vanished from his eyes. He shoved her against a tree by the roadside.

“How are you still going to argue your way out of this?”

Clara’s back slammed against the trunk, pain shooting through her, but she knew there was no time left to

argue.

Mia was still inside.

Clara made a decision at once.

“I’ll tell you where Wendy is. You take people back to look for Mia.”

Julian stared at her for a few seconds, then released her. “Fine. Get in.”

The car cut through the city as Clara named one place after another.

But by dawn, Wendy still had not been found.

Julian’s expression grew darker and darker.

He did not notice at all that Clara’s face was growing paler, or that the wound on her face was starting to

become infected.

Finally, they stopped outside an abandoned law office.

Julian rushed out and helped Wendy up.

Wendy lifted her head, her face streaked with tears.

“Julian, you finally came for me.” She cried as she shrank into his arms. “When I opened my eyes, you were

gone. It was so dark around me, and I could hear so many men’s voices. I ran out…”

She sobbed so hard she could barely breathe. “Julian, am I going to die?”

Julian held her and softened his voice.

“No. Remember? This was our first firm. It’s safe here.”

“Yes. Grant & Wells LLP.” Wendy finally quieted down.

Clara stood beside the car and watched them.

So this was the first law firm Julian had ever opened. So it was called Grant & Wells LLP.

Earlier, while they were searching, they had passed many places too.

The restaurant where Clara had first stepped in and taken drinks for Julian.

The courthouse where Julian had first handled a case for Clara.

The places that held their first date, their first kiss, and the first time he proposed.

At every one of them, Julian had only glanced over and kept driving.

He had not recognized a single place.

Clara suddenly coughed twice, and the taste of blood surged into her mouth.

Only then did Julian notice her.

He looked at her pale face and lips that had turned blue from the cold, and his heart clenched hard.

His chest tightened sharply. He quickly took off his suit jacket and draped it over her shoulders.

The next second, Clara shoved him away and staggered forward.

Because she had seen Julian’s assistant.

Why was he here?

Wasn’t he supposed to be looking for Mia?
